Goldeyes Bitten by the Error Bug
July 20, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Errors cost the Winnipeg Goldeyes four unearned runs in the first four innings on Monday night and starter Tony Smith couldn't recover.
A two-base error by centerfielder Reggie Abercrombie in the third and a misplay by shortstop Casio Grider in the fourth resulted in four of St. Paul's first five runs of the game as the Saints went on to rout the Goldeyes 12-6 at CHS Bank Stadium in downtown St. Paul.
After St. Paul put up five runs in the first four innings, Smith just didn't look like the same pitcher who shut down the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park last week
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 24-31 on the season and had their two-game winning streak snapped. The Fish still trail the Joplin Blasters and Kansas City T-Bones by seven games in the American Association Wild Card race.
On Monday night, the Goldeyes opened the scoring in the third inning when Chris Robinson led off with a double, went to third on a ground out by Luis Alen and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adam Heisler.
But in the bottom of the third, things started going south for the Goldeyes. Smith got the first two batters to start the inning, but then he gave up singles to Alonzo Harris and Willie Argo. Vinny DiFazio then hit a fly ball at Abercrombie that was misplayed. DiFazio ended up on second and both base runners scored.
In the top of the fourth, the Goldeyes loaded the bases with nobody out and failed to score and from there, it went from bad to worse. An error by Grider in the fourth resulted in two more unearned runs and by the time the Saints were finished, they put up two in the third, three in the fourth two in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh.
The Goldeyes added a run in the sixth when Casey Haerther singled, went to second on a single by Brad Boyer and scored on a single by Josh Mazzola. They added another run the eighth when Grider doubled, went to third on a Haerther ground out and scored on a ground out by Abercrombie, who has four RBI in three games since his return to the Goldeyes on Saturday.
In the ninth, the Fish added three more runs as Mazzola was hit by a pitch, Robinson doubled and Luis Alen singled home Mazzola. Heisler then singled to score Robinson and Ryan Babineau singled home Alen. But that was it. The St. Paul lead was just too much for the Fish to overcome.
Smith allowed seven runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings, but only three of those runs were earned. The Saints scored five more off reliever Mark Pope in 2 1/3 innings, but only four of those runs were earned.
St Paul finished with 12 runs on 15 hits, while the Goldeyes had six runs on 13 hits. Canadian rookie Chris Robinson had two doubles and went three-for-four on Monday night. Robinson now has a five-game hitting streak and has had five multi-hit games in his first 19 games as a professional. Adam Heisler, Brad Boyer and Casey Haerther each had two hits for the Fish.
St. Paul starter Jeff Shields (9-0, 3.04 ERA) got the win, while Smith (3-2, 3.61 ERA) was tagged with the loss.
The Goldeyes and Saints will play Game 3 of this four-game series on Tuesday night at CHS Field in downtown St. Paul. Left-hander Kyle Anderson (1-4, 6.28 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while right-hander Dustin Crenshaw (8-1, 1.81 ERA) will take to the bump for St. Paul on three days rest.
The game can be heard live on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.
The Goldeyes will play eight games on the road in St. Paul and Kansas City this week and will not return home until Wednesday, July 29 when the Amarillo Thunderheads play at Shaw Park.Tickets for all Goldeyes home games in 2015 are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
