Goldeyes Battle Back to Thwart Pheasants

Just when it looked like the game had slipped away, the Winnipeg Goldeyes dusted themselves off and delivered the knockout blow.
The Goldeyes scored four runs in the eighth inning to beat the Sioux Falls Pheasants 8-6 Thursday night in front of 2,703 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.
With the win, Winnipeg remains one-game back of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for first place in the American Association's North Division, as the RedHawks beat the Wichita Wingnuts 11-7.
Winnipeg tallied three runs in the third inning to begin the scoring, as Yurendell de Caster singled in Ridge Carpenter and Luis Alen drove in Price Kendall and Chris Roberson with a single.
Sioux Falls grabbed the momentum in the fourth inning by scoring four runs to take a 4-3 lead. The Pheasants added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and the Goldeyes suddenly trailed a game they were leading by three runs.
In the eighth, Alen drove in Roberson, while Josh Mazzola extended his hitting streak to 16-games with a double that scored de Caster and Alen to tie the game. Winnipeg then took the lead when Jose Duran doubled in Mazzola for his first RBI as a member of the Goldeyes.
De Caster, who finished the game three-for-three with two RBI, hit a towering home run in the ninth inning to give Winnipeg a two-run cushion.
Ace Walker pitched six innings in his 100th career appearance for the Goldeyes. He allowed five runs on nine hits and takes a no decision.
Billy Spottiswood picked up the win for the Goldeyes thanks to two-thirds of relief, while Brian Beuning got the last two outs for the save.
The Goldeyes and Pheasants play Game 2 of the four-game series tomorrow night. Chris Salamida (2-3, 4.33) will take the ball for Winnipeg, while Sioux Falls is expected to start fellow lefty Pete Gehle (4-5, 4.82).
The pre-game show with Paul Edmonds on TSN 1290 starts at 6:30 p.m. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
