Krout's Outing, Home Runs Power RailCats Past Jackals

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. - Mike Rohde and Mike Massaro each homered for the second straight night and Will Krout threw 7 2/3 strong innings in the RailCats 8-3 win over the Jackals in the series opener on Thursday night. The RailCats improved to 26-33 and are 5-3 so far on their 11-game Can-Am road trip.

With one on, two out, and the game tied at three in the eighth, Rohde hammered an 0-2 fastball from Jackals starter Kyle Greenwalt over the right field wall to give the 'Cats a 5-3 lead. It was Rohde's fourth home run of the season and he has six RBI in his last three contests.

Massaro added a three-run shot in the ninth for the final runs of the game. He is once again tied with Rohde for the team lead with four home runs and has seven RBI in the last two games.

Krout (1-3) held the Jackals to three runs, one earned in a season-high 7 2/3 innings. He had no walks and used a sharp curveball to strike out a season-high six batters.

Adam Klein led off the first inning with a triple to center and scored on a sac fly by Mike Massaro to put the RailCats ahead 1-0.

The Jackals took the lead in the third, as Matt Nandin reached on an error and Chris Curran laid down a bunt single. Bryan Sabatella scored both of them with a triple to right and later came around to score on a wild pitch by Krout to give the Jackals a 3-1 lead.

The RailCats tied the game in the sixth. Klein and Massaro hit back-to-back singles and were bunted over to second and third by Mike Coles. Brian Kolb hit an RBI groundout and Ryan Babineau delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the game at three.

Kyle Greenwalt (3-2) gave up five runs in eight frames for the loss.

Game two of the four-game series is on Friday night at 6:05 Central time. RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock (2-4, 2.46) will square off against tthe Jackals' Steve Fox (8-1, 2.41)
