Colorado Eagles News Release
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Gold team defeated the Blue team, 5-2, tonight in the Colorado Eagles' annual Blue/Gold inter-squad game. For the first time, this season's contest was held at the NoCo Ice Center, home of Northern Colorado Youth Hockey and the Junior Eagles. Steve Haddon's had two goals -- and assisted on the game-winner as Greg Pankewicz coached the Gold side and Fraser Filipic was the Blue team's bench boss.
The Gold squad got out to an early lead with a pair of quick strikes under two minutes in. Brett Lutes notched the first goal and Shane Foster the second right off the ensuing faceoff. Later in the period, Foster dropped the gloves with another rookie, Tyler Barr. And at the 15 minute mark, Derek Hansberry got the game-winner as the Gold team built a 3-0 lead when Steve Haddon found the Arvada, Colo. native all alone in front of goaltender Doug Raeder.
In the second period, the Blue team got on the board when Ryan Tobler picked up where he left off last season when he led the league in power-play goals. The power forward snapped a shot home from the right slot midway through the frame. But Haddon answered for the Gold team later in the period when he collected a turnover in the neutral zone and roofed a shorthanded tally from inside the right circle.
Another familiar scorer cut the lead in half when Kevin Ulanski scored the Blue team's second goal eight minutes into the final frame, but that would be it for his squad. At the 13-minute mark, Barr got in his second fight of the game when he took on defenseman Brett Thurston. Haddon then picked up his second score by putting home a Dan Welch rebound off the left leg of Raeder with under three minutes to play.
The Eagles will play their final preseason game -- their first against an opponent with a different logo on its chest -- on Friday night when the Arizona Sundogs come to the Budweiser Events Center. The Eagles will be wearing special pink jerseys in honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
