HARTFORD, CT - Roberto Ramos and Brandon Bednar hit home runs in the late innings to lead the Hartford Yard Goats to a 6-3 win over the Thunder on Saturday night at Dunkin Donuts Park.
The Thunder offense struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning. With two outs, Trey Amburgey singled and then was driven in when Brandon Wagner doubled up the alley in right-center. Mandy Alvarez followed with a double of this own to take a 2-0 lead against Yard Goats starter Frank Duncan.
Right-hander Brian Keller, the Eastern League's reigning Pitcher of the Week, held Hartford to two runs through the first four innings of his outing. Hartford's second run came with some controversy in the fourth. With men on the corners and one out, Brandon Bednar lifted a fly ball to right and Jhalan Jackson's throw appeared to be in time to get Dom Nunez at the plate, however, he was ruled safe. Thunder catcher Jorge Saez protested and was promptly ejected by the home plate umpire.
The fifth inning proved to be the difference for Keller on Saturday night. With one out, Sam Hilliard singled and advanced to third on a throwing error by Bruce Caldwell. After a strikeout of Drew Weeks, Keller's seventh of the night, Dom Nunez worked a walk and Roberto Ramos followed him with a three-run home run to give the Goats a 5-2 lead. Keller finished five innings and was charged with his eighth loss of the season, he allowed four earned runs on six hits and matched a career-high with four walks in the game.
Brandon Bednar added a solo home run in the eight inning to make it 6-2 Goats, but the Thunder offense would rally in the ninth inning. Working against Reid Humphreys the Thunder loaded the bases with one out and Rashad Crawford plated a run when he bounced into a fielders choice. Anfter another walk, the Goats went back to their bullpen for a left-hander against Bruce Caldwell. Caldwell flied out to left with the bases loaded to end the night.
Mandy Alvarez had a three-hit night to lead the Thunder offense. Trevor Lane went three innings in relief for the Thunder, allowing only two baseruners.
