Kansas City Comets News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (January 14, 2015) - The Missouri Comets have announced the signing of free agent Stephen Paterson on Wednesday. The goalkeeper signed a one-year contract and will be added to the team's roster immediately.
The Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada native will be making his debut on goal this Friday as the Comets host the St. Louis Ambush at the Independence Events Center. Per club policy, terms of the agreement will not be disclosed.
Peterson, 27, was a key member of two conference tournament champions and appeared in two NCAA tournaments with the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks. He played all four years from 2006-2009 and ended his career as the school's leader in career shutouts (23) and set a single-season record with a 0.76 goals against average in 2008.
"I am very excited to start in goal this Friday at the Independence Events Center," Paterson said. "This is a great team with great leaders and I can't wait to help the team get another victory."
With Danny Waltman out due to a right ankle injury suffered last Saturday and Brendan Allen overseas in Europe trying out with other teams, Paterson will become the Comets' fourth player to defend the team's goal this season.
"Danny [Waltman] is a phenomenal person. He is an amazing leader on and off the field and he always knows what to do with the ball," Paterson said. "Filling his shoes is not easy but I am going to do everything possible to help the team get more wins."
After graduating, Paterson joined the Fighting Leathernecks coaching staff in 2010 as a student assistant coach and has helped guide Leatherneck goalies to two All-Summit League selections and five Summit League Defensive Player of the Week honors.
In addition, Paterson played for seven seasons in the Premier Developmental League of the United Soccer League (PDL) with the Thunder Bay Chill.
The Comets will host the St. Louis Ambush this Friday at the Independence Events Center with their sights set on earning the team's thirteenth consecutive victory.
