Frantic Turlock Express Rally From Five Down to Beat Las Vegas

1/14/15 - The Turlock Express were playing flat and dug a deep hole for themselves Sunday against the Las Vegas Legends. Coming off a 16-5 win over the Seattle Impact on Friday, Express player/coach Enrique Tovar was looking forward to Sunday's game against his former team.

But then Las Vegas scored first and methodically built a 4-0 lead. Turlock would get on the board twice, but found themselves trailing 7-2 with just five minutes remaining in the game.

Turlock went to sixth attacker mode immediately after the Legends 7th goal, but took almost seven minutes to score when Martyn Arista broke through at 10:01. Arista would score the next two goals to cut the score to 7-5 with 3:37 to go. Jose Martinez scored 41 seconds later and Adrian Gutierrez tied the game with 19 seconds left to send it to overtime.

Tovar rolled the dice against Las Vegas and kept sixth attacker Juan Gonzalez on the field and it was Arista again who scored at 4:53 of overtime to give Turlock an 8-7 win that leap frogged them into third place in the Pacific Division at 8-6. Turlock is now 7-0 at home, but only 1-6 on the road.

In a similar result, but far less dramatic game, the Milwaukee Wave built an 8-2 lead and held on for an 8-5 win against the Chicago Mustangs, which propelled Milwaukee ahead of Chicago into second place on the Central DIvision.

MASL Team of the Week

GK - William Vanzela, Baltimore Blast - Vanzela is the last guard in Baltimore's Fort Knox defense and very little gets by him. The Blast star goalkeeper allowed only two goals against Syracuse to lower his GAA to a surreal 2.44.

D - Martyn Arista, Turlock Express - Sidelined all season with a collapsed lung Arista made a triumphant return to the Express last weekend. The 24 year old scored six goals and an assist in two victories. The fourth year defender had three of Turlock's five fourth quarter goals and then scored the overtime game-winner.

D - Pat Healey, Baltimore Blast - Healey is the Blast captain, leader, and no stranger to the MASL Team of the Week. Healey had a goal and an assist in Baltimore's win over Syracuse and a game-high four blocks and leads with the MASL with 29 blocks. This is his third TOTW appearance of the season.

M - Brent Hobson, Wichita B-52s - If there was a 7th man award for Team of the Week it would have gone to Hobson last week when he scored four goals and three assists in two wins in Seattle, including an incredible three shorthanded goals on January 3. But Hobson earned his stay this week by scoring two goals and an assist in a 7-5 win over the St. Louis Ambush.

F - Josh Gardner, Missouri Comets - Freshly signed from an outdoor career that included seven years in Major League Soccer, Gardner made his MASL debut a memorable one with three goals and three assists in the Comets home win over the Tulsa Revolution.

F - Andrew Hoxie, Rochester Lancers - The moustache heard 'round the world landed hard on the Detroit Waza Flo. Hirsute forward Andrew Hoxie scored four of the first five Lancers goals and then got tired of scoring and dished our four assists in Rochester's big home win.

Geno-600

Genoni Martinez played in his 600th career game (including regular season and postseason games) on Sunday and celebrated with a goal and an assist in the 8-2 win. Martinez began his career in 1994 with the Monterrey La Raza.

Gordy Goes East

The St. Louis Ambush made a big splash this week by acquiring Gordy Gurson in a three team trade with the Seattle Impact and the Milwaukee Wave. The Ambush received Gurson and sent forward Stefan St. Louis to Milwaukee, while Seattle received cash considerations. Gurson leads the MASL with 36 goals in his rookie season.

B-52s Shorting Out Opponents

The Wichita B-52s are putting their time in the sin bin to good use. Not only do they lead the MASL with a 75.86% penalty killing percentage (tied with the Monterrey Flash), but they have scored a league-leading eight shorthanded goals, one more than they have allowed while a man down this season.

Comets Dominate on the Power Play

The Missouri Comets lead the MASL with a 63.64% power play success rate, though their 21 power play goals is second to Monterrey's 25. The Comets Leo Gibson leads the way with 11 power play goals.

And Then There Was One

The Saltillo Rancho Seco shocked the Dallas Sidekicks by scoring two goals in the last 1:12 for a 7-6 win, their first of the season. The Harrisburg Heat, however lost twice to fall to 0-10, their 14th and 15th straight losses dating to last season. The Heat are the last remaining winless team in the MASL.
