Goalkeeper Evan Newton Named to USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 8
August 18, 2020 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Indy Eleven News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week Presented by Cleer Audio for Week 8 of the 2020 regular season on Tuesday, which included the second placement of the 2020 campaign for Indy Eleven goalkeeper Evan Newton.
The TotW honor comes after the veteran 'keeper kept the back of his net empty in Indy Eleven's 1-0 win against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC last Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. A penalty save and two additional stops after Indy dropped to 10-men contributed to Newton's 50th clean sheet, making him the first USL Championship netminder to reach that milestone. The 2018 USL Championship Golden Glove winner also tops the league's all-time charts in saves (460) and wins (69W-45L-39D).
After earning his first nod in Week 3, Newton is among the six Indy Eleven players named to the Team of the Week throughout the 2020 season, joining Tyler Pasher (Weeks 1, 3, 4 & 5), Carl Haworth (Week 1), Ayoze (Week 3), Neveal Hackshaw (Week 3).
Newton has made 35 starts since joining Indy Eleven in 2019, collecting 12 clean sheets and making 91 saves along the way. Click here to read Newton's full player bio.
