Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - Tuesday's game, in which the Gnats beat the Charleston RiverDogs 5-3, played out like a twisted reprise of Monday's game. Monday, the Charleston came from behind to beat the Gnats 5-3 in 11 innings. Tuesday, the Gnats (27-17) scored three in the bottom of the eighth inning to grab the win by the same score, and move back within three games of the first-place RiverDogs (30-13).
Down 3-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth, SS TJ Rivera and 3B Aderlin Rodriguez each drew walks to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. With two outs, 1B Brian Harrison, who has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, roped a single into leftfield to drive home Rivera with the tying run. RF Charley Thurber followed by ripping a triple up the right-center field gap to score Rodriguez and Harrison for a 5-3 lead.
Thurber, who finished 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a walk, was also responsible for the first Gnats' run of the night. In the second inning, he doubled, advanced to third on 'Dogs' CF Mason Williams' fielding error and scored on a wild pitch to put the Gnats in front 1-0. In the fourth, Rodriguez lined an RBI single into left to drive home Rivera for a 2-0 lead.
The RiverDogs bounced back to take the lead with a three-run top of the sixth against Savannah reliever Randy Fontanez. 2B Angelo Gumbs doubled to start the rally, and scored on 1B Raymond Nunez's single into center to make the score 2-1. Two batters later, SS Cito Culver's triple over the head of CF Gilbert Gomez drove home two runs for a 3-2 Charleston advantage.
Savannah reliever Chasen Bradford worked a scoreless seventh and eighth innings with two strikeouts for his first Savannah win. LHP TJ Chism set down the 'Dogs 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the year.
Savannah starter Alex Panteliodis fought his way through four innings in which he allowed five hits and three walks, but no runs.
The Gnats will send RHP Domingo Tapia (3-2, 4.25) to the mound in the rubber game of the three-game series Wednesday at 7:05 against RHP Scottie Allen (1-2, 3.07) for the 'Dogs. Gates open at 6 pm. The radio broadcast, presented by Subway, begins on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45 pm.
