SAVANNAH, Ga. - David Trahan did not allow an earned run but was tagged with his 11th consecutive loss as the Sand Gnats dropped an 8-1 decision to the Columbus Catfish on Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Trahan's 11 straight losses ties a South Atlantic League record.

The SAL record for consecutive losses in a season was set by Louis McKewn of Salisbury in 1966 and tied by Robbie Beckett of Charleston in 1991 before Trahan became the third pitcher to accomplish the feat. Trahan won his first start of the season, on April 8 at Asheville, but has recorded 11 losses and six no-decisions since. Nine of those games have been quality starts.

Trahan allowed four unearned runs in six innings on the hill and recorded four strikeouts. Trahan scattered eight hits and walked one in the effort. Coby Mavroulis came on in the seventh and allowed two runs on two hits and four walks in 1.2 innings of work. Levinski took over with two outs in the eighth and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in 1.1 frames.

The Gnats got out to an early lead when Ofilio Castro took Cory Wade deep in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to left. The homer was Castro's fourth of the year and was his 35th RBI this season.

The Catfish responded in the top of the fourth, grabbing four unearned runs at Trahan's expense. Columbus recorded four hits in the inning, including hits by Lucas May and Ivan DeJesus, which scored two runners each. Columbus tacked on two more in the seventh when Russ Mitchell took Mavroulis deep for a two-run shot to left.

The Gnats and Catfish continue the series Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Savannah will send right-hander Carlos Martinez to the mound to face Columbus righty David Horlacher. Tomorrow is Thirsty Thursday, featuring half-price beers and $1 slices of Papa John's Pizza.
