Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The offenses were out in full force on Wednesday night and there were few doughnuts put up on the scoreboard, but despite a 14-hit night for the Dash-securing all fans with tickets to Wednesday's game one dozen free doughnuts from Krispy Kreme-Winston-Salem fell to Salem 16-10 at BB&T Ballpark. Combined with Kinston's win, Winston is now tied for the final playoff spot in the Southern Division.
Despite taking a six-run lead after two innings, the Dash (35-30, 67-68) allowed 14 unanswered Red Sox runs to drop game one of the final home series of the 2011 regular season.
The game started out drastically in Winston-Salem's favor. After the Red Sox (28-36, 60-74) put up a first inning run, the Dash came back to tie it in the bottom of the first. Tyler Saladino singled and later scored on a groundout by Ian Gac.
The Dash jumped on Salem starter Stolmy Pimentel in the second inning. The first five batters reached, starting with a lead-off home run from Mike Blanke. Jared Mitchell then singled, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Kyle Colligan then walked before Daniel Wagner loaded the bases with a bunt single. Saladino then stepped in and singled to score one run, Juan Silverio grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score another, and Wagner crossed home on a wild pitch. With two outs, Andy Wilkins singled before Gac slammed his league-leading 33rd home run of the season.
Gac's home run gives him the highest Carolina League single-season total since Daniel Peoples hit 34 for Kinston in 1997.
The comfortable lead wouldn't last long, as Salem batted around in the third and pulled within one. Zach Gentile singled and reached second on an error by Colligan to start the inning. With one out, five straight Sox batters had base hits. Heiker Meneses singled, and then Bryce Brentz followed suit to score Gentile. Matt Spring plated Meneses with his second double of the night, and Jorge Padron drove in two with a single. Dash starter Jake Petricka loaded the bases with two outs, and walked Gentile to plate the sixth run of the game for Salem.
The 7-6 lead of the Dash also wouldn't stand much longer. Petricka was pulled for Leroy Hunt near the end of the third inning. In the fifth, Miles Head walked with one out and moved to second on a single by Peter Hissey. Shannon Wilkerson then reached on catcher's interference to load the bases before Gentile cleared them with a three-run double, giving the Sox a 9-7 lead.
The scoring wasn't done for the Salem Sox. In the next inning against reliever Santos Rodriguez, both Spring and Head homered to put the Sox up four. Wilkerson was then walked, Gentile was hit by a pitch, and Derrik Gibson also walked. Meneses then drove in two more with a single, extending the Salem lead to 13-7.
Brian Blough made his Advanced-A debut for the Dash in the sixth, and pitched the seventh. He allowed two runs when Padron and Head reached on base hits. Singles from Hissey and Gentile scored two more runs, and Maneses scored the 18th Red Sox run in the eighth when he reached on a wild pitch after a strike out. He crossed home on an error by Saladino.
Winston notched a couple runs in the ninth when Nick Ciolli doubled and Blanke added his second home run of the game.
Though he allowed seven runs (all earned) on ten hits in 5.2 innings, Pimentel (5-4) picked up the win. Hunt (3-2) was hit with the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings. Manny Rivera picked up the extended save after throwing 3.1 innings.
Winston-Salem and Salem continue the final home stand of the 2011 regular season on Thursday night at 7 p.m. RHP Ryan Buch (4-4, 4.70) is scheduled to throw for the Dash opposite RHP Ryan Pressly (6-11, 4.58).
