Wilmington Watches Late Lead Evaporate

Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - On a night that was owned by pitching, a defensive miscue by a Wilmington hurler cost the Blue Rocks dearly.

Ryan Dennick's

pivotal error in the eighth inning on Wednesday gave the Myrtle Beach Pelicans an extra out that allowed them to score the winning run in a 2-1 setback for the Blue Crew at Frawley Stadium.

The Rocks led 1-0 entering the eighth, and Dennick (3-7) came out to the mound for his second inning of relief.

The right-hander quickly found trouble by yielding a lead-off single to left by Leury Garcia.

Dennick then fell behind the next six batters he faced as a potential win vanished.

After he got Ryan Strausborger to fly out to left, Jared Prince sent a double to the left-center gap that plated Garcia and knotted the game at 1-1.

Dennick then appeared to get a critical second out in the inning when Andrew Clark hit one softly on the ground to first.

Joey Lewis

scooped the ball up and flipped it perfectly to Dennick covering the bag, but the ball went in and out of the pitcher's glove.

The error put runners at first and third with only one down, so when Dennick fanned the next batter, the inning was still alive.

That allowed Chris McGuiness' double, which snuck just inside the right-field chalk, to score Prince with the run that put Myrtle Beach ahead to stay.

The late rally spoiled a strong start by Wilmington southpaw Justin Marks

The Kentucky native allowed five hits, but kept the Pelicans off the board for six frames.

His biggest asset was his ability to wiggle out of jams.

Marks stranded six men on base, including four in scoring position.

Wilmington got its lone run of the night in the sixth.

Carlo Testa

opened the frame with a double and scored one out later on Ryan Stovall's

humpback liner to right.

It was the only score Chad Bell yielded in six innings pitched.

The left-hander took a no-decision, as reliever Zach Osborne (5-2) came on and tossed a scoreless seventh to grab the win.

Jimmy Reyes worked around a two-out single in the ninth to nail down his second save of the year.

The Rocks continue their final homestand of the 2011 season with another contest against the Pelicans on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.

Michael Mariot (8-4, 3.28) hits the hill for Wilmington against Myrtle Beach southpaw Miguel De Los Santos (6-3, 3.59).

Broadcast coverage begins at 6:05 p.m. as studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
