Gwinnett improves to 31-17-6 on the year and moves back into a tie for second place in the ECHL's South Division with the win.
After skating to a scoreless first period, Chad Painchaud had what looked to be the game's first goal 6:20 into the second period. The marker was disallowed as the puck was played with a high stick.
Gwinnett needed just 56 seconds after the disallowed goal to get on the board. Paul Flache intercepted an Ice Pilots outlet pass in the Gwinnett zone, slid through the neutral zone before ripping a slap shot past Pensacola netminder Michael Mole for the tally. Flache's goal came unassisted at the 7:16 mark of the second period.
Mike Vigilante collected his 19th goal of the season at the 17:35 mark of the second period as he ripped a slap shot from the right wing circle that trickled past Mole for the goal. Andy Contois and Jim Jackson collected the assists on the goal for the Gladiators as the hooked up to move the puck up ice to set up the marker.
Gwinnett took a 3-0 lead on the Ice Pilots with Vigilante's second goal of the game. Collecting a loose puck in the slot, Vigilante backhanded the puck over the shoulder of Mole for the power play goal. Scott Mifsud and Matt York had the assists on the goal at the 9:56 mark of the third period for Gwinnett.
Pensacola snapped Gladiators netminder Dan Turple's shutout bid at the 11:33 mark of the third period with a power play goal. Greg Watson beat Turple from the right wing circle for the marker off a feed from Rob Rankin. Jesse Baraniuk also had an assist on the tally.
Mifsud posted an empty net goal for Gwinnett with 1:06 left in the game to put the game away. Jon Awe and Joel Stepp posted the assists on the marker for Gwinnett.
Turple turned aside 30 of 31 Ice Pilot shot to record the win for the Gladiators. Gwinnett finished 1-for-4 on the power play while the Ice Pilots finished 1-for-5 on the man advantage.
