Ice Pilots fall to Gwinnett 4-1

GWINNETT, FL - The Pensacola Ice Pilots ran into a hot goaltender on Sunday afternoon and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Gwinnett Gladiators at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Dan Turple was outstanding stopping 30 of 31 shots and only goal he would allow would be on the power play in the third period. Greg Watson notched the goal on the power play with a rocket from Jesse Baraniuk and Rob Rank. For Rankin it extended his assist streak to 10 games.

Gwinnett won their 32nd of the year and 20th on home ice and tied for second place in the South Division. The Ice Pilots fell to 7-22-0-0 on the road and 17-35-1-1 overall.

In the opening period both teams were feeling each other out and there were no goals. Goaltenders Michael Mole and Dan Turple made some saves to keep the game scoreless. There was only one power play in the first period.

The Gladiators had a goal called back early in the second period when it the puck was knocked down by a high stick at the Ice Pilots blue line. But in short order the Gladiators took a 1-0 lead on a slapshot from the blue line. Gwinnett made it 2-0 when they scored on a shot that was deflected off of Ice Pilots skates into the net.

In the third period the Gladiators added a power play goal to make it 3-0 then Watson scored and it was 3-1. The Gladiators notched a goal into the empty net to round out the scoring.

The Pensacola Ice Pilots conclude a short two game road trip on Tuesday when they travel to Columbia to face the Inferno at 7:05 eastern, 6:05 pm central.
