Atlanta Gladiators News Release


The Gwinnett Gladiators picked up two points this weekend and posted a record of 1-1-0-0 last week. The Gladiators remain in second place in the South Division three points behind the Greenville Road Warriors. Gwinnett currently has 59 points and a record of 28-18-2-1 on the season. Gwinnett will travel to Trenton and Wheeling for their next two games on Wednesday and Thursday and host Evansville and Cincinnati for their 10th Anniversary weekend, this Saturday and Sunday.

Wednesday, 2/6: Game @ Trenton - @ 7:05 p.m.

Trenton Preview: Trenton is currently ranked fourth in the Atlantic Division. The last time the two teams met ended in a 4-2 win for Gwinnett on December 9th. The Titans lost their last game 6-4 to the Orlando Solar Bears on February 2nd. Trenton is led by Andy Bohmbach with 38 points in 39 games and goaltender Scott Wedgewood who has posted a 0.893 save percentage and a 3.37 goals against average.

Thursday, 2/7: Game @ Wheeling - @ 7:00 p.m.

Wheeling Preview: Wheeling is ranked third in the Atlantic Division with 21-16-3-5 record and 50 points. The last game Wheeling played ended in a 2-1 loss to the Reading Royals in February 1st. The Nailers are led by forward Paul Crowder who has tallied 35 points in 41 games and netminder Scott Darling with a 9-7-1-1 record and a 0.903 save percentage. This is the first meeting between the two teams this season.

Saturday, 2/9: Game vs. Evansville - @ 7:05 p.m.

Evansville Preview: The last time Gwinnett faced the Icemen ended in a 3-1 victory for Gwinnett on October 28th. Evansville is ranked last in the North Division with a 17-27-1-3 record. The last game the IceMen played ended in a 3-1 defeat against the Elmira Jackals on February 2nd. Gwinnett has posted a 3-0-0 record against the IceMen and a 7-3-0-1 record against North Division teams this season.

Sunday, 2/10: Game vs. Cincinnati - @ 4:05 p.m.

Cincinnati Preview: The Cincinnati Cyclones dropped a 7-2 decision in their last game against the Fort Wayne Komets on February 2nd. The Cyclones are first in the North Division with a 26-16-4-2 record and 58 points this season. Cincinnati is led by David Pacan with 38 points in 39 games, and goaltender Mark Guggenberger with a 0.909 save percentage and a 2.38 GAA. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this year as Gwinnett posted a 3-2-0-0 record last year against the Cyclones.

Friday, February 1: South Carolina 2, Gwinnett 0-L

South Carolina's goaltender Ryan Zapolski stopped 29 shots from Gwinnett in a 2-0 shut out win. The first goal of the game came from Luka Vidmar, who scored 9:59 into the second period with assists from Phil Mangan and Cameron Brodie. Hunter Bishop capped the scoring with an empty net goal with 51 seconds left in the third, after Gwinnett goalie Louis Domingue was pulled in favor of an extra attacker. Domingue made 23 saves in the loss.

Saturday, February 2: Gwinnett 3, South Carolina 0-W

The Gladiators earned a 3-0 shut out victory against the South Carolina Stingrays. Justin Bowers scored the game winning goal 8:09 into the first period, his 11th goal of the season. Joey Haddad and Alex Belzile both picked up an assist on the marker. Gwinnett widened the margin to 2-0 with Casey Pierro-Zabotel's power play goal 2:11 into the third period. Sacha Guimond and Bowers earned helpers on the play. The last goal for the Gladiators came 4:08 into the third from Joey Haddad. Bowers picked up his third point in the game and Belzile picked up his second. Louis Domingue picked up his second shut out of the season with 24 saves.

News & Notes:

Shut out! Gladiator's goaltender Louis Domingue picked up his second shutout of the season with a 3-0 win over the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday, February 2nd. Domingue made 24 saves against the Stingrays. The Mont. St. Hilaire, PQ native had his first shutout against the Orlando Solar Bears on November 23, where he made 22 saves for the 1-0 win. Last season Domingue earned four shutouts while with the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Justin Bowers: Forward Justin Bowers collected one goal and two assists in Saturday night's shutout win against the South Carolina Stingrays. Bowers scored the first goal of the game 8:09 into the first and had a hand in the other two goals during the game. Bowers has picked up 39 points in 46 games this season. In his eight games with Gwinnett he has earned 10 points. The Halifax, NS native has had 10 multiple point games this season, three have been with Gwinnett.

Penalty Kill: The Gladiators were 100 percent on the penalty kill in last weekend's games against the South Carolina Stingrays. The Gladiators allowed 11 power play chances but did not give up any power play goals in either game. Gwinnett is currently ranked fourth in the league on the penalty kill, killing off 84.8 percent of power play chances. In the last 10 games the Gladiators have given up eight power play goals on 43 opportunities.

Coyotes System: On Saturday, February 2 the Gwinnett Gladiators, Portland Pirates, and Phoenix Coyotes all earned shut out wins. Gwinnett goaltender Louis Domingue stopped 24 shots against the South Carolina Stingrays, Pirates netminder Mark Visentin stopped 22 shot against the Albany Devils, and Phoenix goalie Mike Smith made 17 saves against the Dallas Stars. The Gladiators affiliates are Portland (AHL) and Phoenix (NHL).

Home Sweet Home: The Gladiators have played their last six games at home at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. In that span, they have earned a 2-3-1-0 record and picked up five points to keep them in second place in the South Division. Despite being below .500 in that time, Gwinnett has posted a 14-8-2-1 record when playing at home this season. The Gladiators have 11 home games left in the season. The Gladiators next home games are this Saturday against the Evansville Icemen and Sunday against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
