Gladiators Fall to Sea Wolves 4-3
April 9, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators couldn't overcome two unlucky bounces in the first two periods as they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Mississippi Sea Wolves on Friday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum to even the best of five series at one game apiece. Mississippi jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Louis Dumont capitalized on a weird bounce and slid the puck into an empty net. Gladiators goaltender Michael Garnett slid behind his net to knock down a routine dump-in and was caught out of position as the puck ricochetted off seam in the glass and dribbled right to a waiting Dumont. Patrick Rochon and Greg Gardner added the assists on the goal 5:55 into the first period. Rick Emmett equalized the contest on the Gladiators second power play opportunity of the night as the veteran defenseman slid down the right wing wall and took a rink wide pass from Anthony Aquino and buried his second goal of the playoffs. Brandon Dietrich picked up an assist on the tally at 12:36 of the first. Anthony Battaglia regained the Sea Wolves lead on the power play as he slid in over the Gladiators blue line untouched and slid the puck under Garnett as he got the netminder to go down to make the save. Dumont and Sergei Kuznetsov added the assists on the goal at 7:04 of the middle stanza. The Gladiators again tied the contest up, this time at two goals apiece. Blue Bennefield was able to rip a centering feed from the right wing circle past Gardner. Chris Durno fed Kris Goodjohn in the circle before the center man fed Bennefield in the circle for the power play goal at 12:50 of the second period. Mississippi regained the lead capitalizing on another weird bound off a seam in the dasher board glass causing another puck to jump right into the slot and this time onto the stick of Kuznetsov. The forward banged the puck past Garnett at 14:18 of the second to give the Sea Wolves a 3-2 lead going into the second intermission. Battaglia and Rochon picked up the helpers on the goal. The Gladiators tied the contest up at three on a text-book deflection by Jim Jackson on the power play at 12:05 of the third period. Jackson got a piece of Swinson's shot from the point to deflect it past the netminder for the tally. Kris Goodjohn also added an assist on the goal for the Gladiators. With just 23 seconds left, Kuznetsov added his second of the night for the Sea Wolves as he took a pass along the goal line and beat Garnett over the shoulder for the winner. Rochon added an assist on the game winning power play goal for the Sea Wolves. Gwinnett scored all three of its goal on the power play while being outshot 39-32 by the Sea Wolves in the loss.
The best-of-five Central Division Semi Final shifts to the Arena at Gwinnett Center for game #3 tomorrow night between the Gladiators and the Sea Wolves at 7:35 p.m. Wear white to the game and help the Gladiators white out the Arena and the Sea Wolves.
