Give the Tides 3 Hours and You'll Probably Have Time to Spare

May 19, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Critics have often said that baseball, our national pastime, takes too much time. "The games are too long," they say. With this in mind, Major League Baseball is conducting an experiment in the Minor Leagues to keep baseball games moving at a reasonable pace. Early results indicate the experiment is achieving its desired results, but we'll let you be the judge.

In case you didn't notice, the video board at Harbor Park now features a countdown clock, which you can see highlighted in the above photo. This clock serves a few different purposes. First, it provides a countdown to the start of each game, ensuring that games start on time. Second, it provides a countdown between each half inning, ensuring that both teams promptly return to their spots in the field or the batter's box. Lastly, it provides a countdown between each pitch, ensuring that pitchers and hitters stay focused and get down to business.

As a result, the average duration of a Tides home game so far in 2015 is just 2 hours and 39 minutes. And this calculation includes two games that went into extra innings and a game partially delayed by rain. To give some perspective, an average Tides game is much shorter than any of the "Lord of the Rings" movies and is more than an hour shorter than the screen classics "Gone with the Wind," "Ben Hur," and "Lawrence of Arabia."

Now, if you're not one of the critics and you enjoy baseball, then we hope you're still getting enough baseball. We typically open the gates at Harbor Park 65 minutes before the start of each game (or 80 minutes before the start of the game if you're a season ticket holder) and send you home with an average of 2 hours and 39 minutes of baseball with all kinds of entertainment throughout. And if you still want more, you can always come back. We still have 57 home games left on our 2015 schedule and we'd love to see at all of them.

Tides take on Louisville; Wright and Wilson make the trip up to Baltimore

The Tides continue their seven-game road trip in Louisville tonight, looking to capitalize on a big 9-3 victory over the Bats in the series opener Monday night.

Meanwhile, the pitching rotation for the Tides is bound to look a little different for the foreseeable future with both Mike Wright and Tyler Wilson joining the Orioles in Baltimore. In case you missed it, Wright made a spectacular start for the Orioles on Sunday, throwing 7.1 scoreless innings and earning a W in his Major League debut.

Then, the Tides received word yesterday that the Orioles would be calling up Tyler Wilson as well. Wilson's first appearance for the Orioles will be his Major League debut, so stay tuned to what's happening in Baltimore.
