Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY (5/19/2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped two games today to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. The first game, which was suspended in the 10th inning due to rain on Monday night, finished Tuesday afternoon. The IronPigs took the first game, 2-1, on a Russ Canzler two-out single to left field. Syracuse lost the second game on Tuesday, 5-4. The Chiefs scored all four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, with a different Chief driving in each run.
Lehigh Valley (14-26) struck early and often in Tuesday night's game. The IronPigs were scoreless through the first two innings, but put up three runs in the top of the third inning. Shortstop Chase d'Arnaud and left fielder Cody Asche led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Right fielder Domonic Brown followed the two singles with an RBI double, driving in d'Arnaud and sending Asche to third. Syracuse starter Taylor Hill then struck out the next two batters. With two outs and runners on second and third, second baseman Tyler Henson singled in both runners, extending the IronPigs' lead to 3-0.
The IronPigs were not done, as they tacked on another run in the top of the fourth. Hill surrendered a one-out single to d'Arnaud, who then advanced to second on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Brown singled to push d'Arnaud to third and Canzler singled to increase the Lehigh Valley lead to 4-0.
Syracuse (16-23) finally got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth. Right fielder Darin Mastroianni and first baseman Ian Stewart each worked walks off of Lehigh Valley starter Adam Morgan to begin the inning. Left fielder Mark Minicozzi then singled to load the bases for the Chiefs with none out. The Chiefs' first run came in the next at-bat when third baseman Jason Martinson hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Mastroianni. The next batter, catcher Steve Lerud, doubled down the right-field line, scoring Stewart and pushing Minicozzi to third. Lerud moved to third on a Cutter Dykstra fielder's choice that scored Minicozzi. Jose Lozada, pinch-hitting for Hill, drove in Lerud for the Chiefs' fourth run. At the end of four, the Chiefs and IronPigs were knotted at four.
The game was scoreless over the next two innings, with only four total runners reaching base. In the top of the seventh, Lehigh Valley broke the 4-4 tie. Center fielder Brian Bogusevic reached first on a fielder's choice. In the next at-bat, Henson doubled off of Felipe Rivero, driving in the go-ahead run and making the score 5-4.
Syracuse and Lehigh Valley will play the final game of the three-game series Wednesday with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. The Chiefs will send right-hander Mitch Lively to the mound to face left-hander Anthony Vasquez.
