Charlotte Knights News Release

(MOOSIC, PA) - The Charlotte Knights tallied 13 hits on their way to a 5-4 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in game two of a three-game series on Tuesday night.

After being shut out in game one, the Knights offense showed up early on Tuesday night, scoring four runs on five hits in the top of the second inning.

Trayce Thompson started the frame with a lead-off double - his eighth two-bagger of the season - and was followed by back-to-back walks to load the bases. Drew Garcia then gave the Knights their first lead of the game by scoring Thompson with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Three-consecutive singles would follow, each scoring a run and giving the Knights an early 4-0 advantage.

With the Knights still leading 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning, RailRiders outfielder Tyler Austin would tie the game with one swing of the bat. After a walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases, Austin connected on a Brad Penny offering for his second home run of the season, a grand slam that tied the game at 4-4.

Penny (3-3, 5.50) would buckle down and not allow another run in his 6.0 innings pitched as he scattered seven hits while striking out a season-high eight batters on his way to his third win of the season.

The Knights were able to break the 4-4 tie in the top of the fifth inning when Thompson - who singled and stole second base - scored on a Matt Tuiasosopo RBI-single to right field. RailRiders starter LHP Matt Tracy (0-1, 4.84) would be saddled with the loss.

Thompson and Leury Garcia led the Knights offensive attack with three and four hits respectively, with Thompson scoring two runs and Garcia scoring one and driving in another. Jason Coats and Tuiasosopo both contributed multi-hit games as well, with each tallying a pair of singles.

The trio of LHP Jarrett Casey, RHP Matt Lindstrom and RHP Jairo Asencio all pitched scoreless innings in relief of Penny, with each allowing only one hit.

The tying run did reach second base with two outs in the ninth inning, but Asencio was able to strike out RailRiders slugger Kyle Roller for the final out of the game to earn his seventh save of the season.

The Knights will look to win their fourth-straight series with a victory in Wednesday's rubber match against the RailRiders. RHP Erik Johnson is set to take the mound for the Knights in the 10:35 a.m. matchup on Education Day at PNC Field. Catch all the action by tuning-in to the Knights flagship station, ESPN 730 AM.
