Amarillo Gorillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Central Hockey League Wednesday named Gorillas assistant captain Derek Hahn the Oakley Player of the Week after a three-game, eight-point week just before the league's holiday break. The award comes at a fitting time, as Derek celebrated his 28th birthday on Tuesday.
This marks the second consecutive week in which a member of the Gorillas has won a CHL weekly award, and also the second straight time the honor has been announced the day after the player's birthday. Last week, Shawn Degagne won the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week Award the afternoon following his 27th birthday.
In a game against Corpus Christi at home, followed by a pair of road contests at expansion Youngstown, the center totaled eight points on a goal and seven assists, while also obtaining a plus-four plus-minus rating. Hahn recorded three against versus the Rayz on Tuesday, December 20th, before adding a goal and four assists in Amarillo's 5-2 win at Youngstown last Thursday. The Steelhounds were able to keep Hahn point-free on Friday, a 7-1 loss that snapped the Gorillas' CHL season-best seven-game win streak.
Hahn's play contributed to eight of Amarillo's 11 goals during the week and the Elmira, Ontario, native now finds himself as the CHL points-leader with 45 on the season, broken down by 18 goals and 27 assists, both ranking in the league's top 10. The production has been helped tremendously by a recent surge in which Hahn has notched 24 points in his last nine games.
"Derek's been playing outstanding for us all season long and has been a huge part of our recent winning streak," said Head Coach and Director of Player Operations Joe Ferras. "He's been sensational since Day One and we believe he is very deserving of an All-Star nod."
The Southern Conference Starters for the 2006 Obra Holmes CHL All-Star Game are scheduled to be announced tomorrow afternoon.
Recently off a seven-game winning streak, Amarillo sits within nine points of first place in the Southwest Division and has improved its record to 11-11-2 for 24 points. Odessa continues to hold control of first place with a 15-8-3 record for 33 points after three straight wins over fellow division-rival Lubbock. The Cotton Kings, meanwhile, remain in the second spot with 27 points and a 13-13-1 mark. The Gorillas have at least two games in hand on each of their division mates and play the top-ranked Jackalopes three times in their next eight games.
