WEEK IN REVIEW (2 games / 2-0)
Friday, December 23 RiverKings 4 Bossier-Shreveport 2 @ DCC
Rookie forward Darrell Stoddard scored a pair of goals and Ryan Campbell chipped in a goal and an assist to lead the RiverKings to the win Saturday night. The win was the second in a row for Memphis and snapped a three-game winning streak for Bossier-Shreveport. Stoddard's first goal came at 5:40 of the first period on a nice feed from behind the net by Travis Banga. Ryan Watson followed with a nice feed of his own from the left circle as he backhanded the puck to Campbell in the right slot who put it home for his 10th of the season and a 2-0 Memphis lead after one. Defenseman Kevin Harris scored his first goal of the season on a delayed penalty at 1:05 of the second period after Banga had carried the puck in the zone and was pulled down. Sheldon Wenzel also assisted for his first RiverKings point and Memphis had a 3-0 advantage. Having come back from 4-1 and 3-1 second period deficits already this season at the DCC, the Mudbugs made a move with goals from Dan Wildfong and Milan Vodrazka to narrow the gap to 3-2 with 9:19 remaining in the game. Stoddard sealed the game with an empty net goal at 19:30. Guy St. Vincent made 25 saves on 27 shots to pick up the victory and improve his record to 5-6-0. All-Star goalie Ken Carrol, in his first appearance against Memphis this season, stopped 20 of 23 shots to see his record fall to 6-6-2 and his career record against the RiverKngs fall to 6-5-4. The Memphis win evened the season series with Bossier-Shreveport at 3-3 with six more meetings on the schedule.
Tuesday, December 27 RiverKings Youngstown @ DCC
The Memphis RiverKings scored all three of their goals on special teams and in the process won their third straight. Dorian Anneck scored the first power-play goal of the night at 4:57 of the first as his pass through the slot was deflected in by a defender's skate. The goal was Anneck's team leading 11th of the season as the first period ended 1-0 with the RiverKings enjoying a 16-4 shots advantage. Anneck's stay as the undisputed goal leader on the team didn't last long as Ryan Campbell took a puck that snuck past the Youngstown point-man and scored short-handed at 2:11 of the second period to make it 2-0. Not only was it Campbell's 11th of the season, but it was his second short-handed goal of the season and the sixth over-all for Memphis. Two minutes and 40 seconds later with his team on a four-on-three power-play, Derek Landmesser fired a slapshot past Steelhound netminder David St. Germain to expand the home team's advantage to 3-0. That is what the scoreboard would read until 10:15 of the third when Bill Mosler steered a centering pass from behind the net from Kelly Sickavish spoiling the RiverKings' shutout bid. But that is all the goal spoiled, as the RiverKings kept the score 3-1 until the final horn. Goalie Guy St. Vincent stopped 24 of 25 shots to improve to 6-6-0. The RiverKings outshot the Steelhounds 32 to 9 in the first and second periods combined and 44-25 for the game.
RIVERKINGS HERE AND THERE
The RiverKings current 3-game winning streak matches their longest of the season when they won 3 straight from 11/7-11/19.
The RiverKings play 7 of their next 9 at home where they have improved to 7-4-1 with the last 3 wins. The team is 3-9-0 on the away from the DCC.
In their two victories over Youngstown this season, 8 of the 9 goals the RiverKings have scored have been on special teams. They have scored 6 power play goals and 2 shorthanded goals combined in their wins on 10/28 and on Tuesday. The Steelhounds, meanwhile are 1-20 on the powerplay in those games. Memphis and Youngstown play 7 more times this season.
The RiverKings have not allowed a powerplay goal in this three game winning streak. Austin, Bossier-Shreveport and Youngstown have gone a combined 0 for 15 in the three games.
Center Ryan Campbell has a 4 game point streak (3g/3a) entering tomorrow night's game at Tulsa. He and Dorian Anneck share the team goal scoring lead with 11.
Goalie Guy St. Vincent's personal 3-game winning streak is the longest of his career. He has also started the last five games in a row and that is the longest such streak of his career. By giving up just 4 goals in the last three games, St Vincent has lowered his GAA to 2.60, which ranks him 5th in the CHL.
The Steelhounds had 4 former RiverKings on the ice for them on Tuesday night...winger Jonathon Gagnon who played 133 games for Memphis from 2001-2004, defenseman Jeff Alcombrack who played 18 games with the RiverKings in the 2001-02 season, defenseman Sam Miller who played 4 games in a Memphis jersey in 01-02 and Dan Buccella who had a one game sip of coffee last season.
After the win over Youngstown, the RiverKings are now 7-3-0 against the Northeast Division.
Darrell Stoddard is 4th among CHL rookies with his 8 goals.
The RiverKings' 6 penalty minutes in Friday's game were the fewest in game this season. It was also the fewest PIM for Memphis in a game since they had 4 at Tulsa on 11/9/04. The 2 team total of 14 PIM on Friday was also a season-low and the lowest game total since that same Tulsa game on 11/9/04.
