Flint Firebirds News Release
SUDBURY, Ont. - Sudbury native Zacharie Giroux scored twice and Nathan Day made 30 saves on 33 shots as the Flint Firebirds beat the Sudbury Wolves, 4-3, on Friday night at Sudbury Arena. Flint won its second consecutive game, the first time this season it has recorded back-to-back wins.
Both teams came out flying and traded goals during an energetic start to the opening period. First, Nathan Aspinall intercepted a Sudbury pass at his offensive blue line and quickly beelined toward the net with a defender in tow. He snapped a shot low that rang off the near-side post and deflected into the net, giving the Birds an early 1-0 lead.
The Wolves answered a minute and a half later when San Jose Sharks prospect Quentin Musty made a tape-to-tape pass from the right-wing half-wall to David Goyette at the far side circle. Goyette potted his third of the season off a one-timer to complete a textbook back-door play, evening the score at one.
Flint grabbed control of the game when it came out with two quick markers in the first 80 seconds of the middle frame. Near the one-minute mark, Kaden Pitre hit the trailing Giroux in the slot for a one-timer that he blasted past Nate Krawchuk.
Just 18 seconds later, Pitre was fed by his older brother Coulson at the right circle. He gathered the puck and fired it top shelf on the short side. Flint struck on its first two shots of the period and extended its lead to 3-1.
The Firebirds continued to pour it on later in the second as they gained the zone with Gavin Hayes, who found a trailing Braeden Kressler. He one-touched the puck back to Giroux, who snapped it home to make the score 4-1.
The Wolves charged back, however, and cut the Flint lead to two when Landon McCallum dropped to one knee on a heavy one-timer from the left circle with less than five to play in the second.
Sudbury then brought itself within one as St. Louis Blues first-round draft choice Dalibor Dvorsky sniped a puck off Day's equipment from a wide angle along the right-wing wall, giving him his first OHL goal in his first OHL game.
The Wolves brought sustained pressure on Day for the remainder of the contest and eventually pulled the goaltender for an extra attacker late in the third period. While skating 6-on-5, they brought a wild scramble and a flurry of short-range chances to the front of in the waning seconds. But Day held strong and the Firebirds skated away with a 4-3 win.
Giroux scored twice in front of a large contingent of family and friends, Kaden Pitre had a goal and an assist and Coulson Pitre handed out two assists. The Firebirds improved to 3-5-0-0 with their second consecutive win and Sudbury dropped to 5-3-0-0. Flint will continue its road trip on Sunday afternoon in North Bay against the Battalion. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at North Bay Memorial Gardens.
