Saginaw, MI - The Saginaw Spirit were unable to capture their first win of the season on home ice, falling to division rival, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds by a score of 6-4 in front of 4,695 at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan.
The Greyhounds earned the first goal of the game from Zach Trott, gaining his 3rd goal of the season. Not quite five minutes later, the Hounds would strike again. Spirit goaltender Tristian Lennox reached out for a loose puck just outside of the crease, but Tye Kartye was able to shoot the puck underneath his reach, adding another goal for the Greyhounds in the first period.
Rookie Josh Bloom was obstructed while on a breakaway and the officials awarded him a penalty shot. Bloom, who took full advantage of the opportunity, shot and scored his first OHL goal and the first goal of the game for the Spirit.
Seizing the momentum of the big home crowd, Danny Katic finished a three-on-two rush set up by New York Islanders draft pick Cole Coskey and Camaryn Baber to tie the game at 2-2.
The Spirit were given a man advantage late in the first period. Minnesota Wild draft pick and Spirit captain Damien Giroux tipped the puck into the net, breaking the tie and pushing the Spirit ahead ending the first period 3-2.
Greyhounds overager Jaden Peca was whistled for a hooking call with just five second remaining in the first period, putting Saginaw on the man advantage with a fresh sheet of ice to work with in the second period.
It was on that fresh sheet of ice that a saucer pass from Blade Jenkins bounced away from Cole Coskey and allowed Cole MacKay to fly down the right side and beat Tristan Lennox with a backhand to tie the game 3-3.
The Hounds pulled ahead for good in the third period when defenseman Robert Calisti wristed a shot from well out past a screened Tristan Lennox.
At 9:08, Alex Johnston finished off a three-on-two rush with a backhand between the legs of Lennox two give the Soo a 5-3 lead.
On a penalty to Camaryn Baber, Rory Kerins scored the first powerplay goal of the season against the Spirit snapping a streak of 13 consecutive penalties killed in a row to start the 2019-20 season.
With 13 seconds left in regulation, Damien Giroux found the back of the net adding another goal for the Spirit with the assist from Ilya Solovyov and Cole Perfetti. The goal gives Giroux back-to-back two goal games. All four of his goals this season have come on the power play.
