Preview: Spirit Rekindle Rivalry with Greyhounds Saturday at the Dow

Saginaw, MI - The Saginaw Spirit (1-1-1-0 3pts.) returns home Saturday, September 28 to take on the West Division rival, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (3-0-0-0 6pts.)  Puck drop begins at 7:05 p.m. from Wendler Arena inside The Dow Event Center.

Saturday is the annual Opioid Awareness Night at The Dow, there will be a Medication Take Back Event in the Budweiser Red Room prior to the game.  Patrons will be able to turn in their unused medications safely and responsibly.  Upon entry, fans will receive a 2019 Spirit magnet schedule presented by Coors Light and Go Great Lakes Bay.

The Spirit and the Greyhounds' were evenly matched last season as both teams finished with 94 points.  Saginaw won the season series tie breaker (4-3-1-0) to capture the West Division title.

Saginaw earned their first victory, 9-3 on the road Friday evening against the Sarnia Sting.  The Spirit had 12 different players tally points in the victory and six players contributed multi-point efforts against the Sting.

2019 Saginaw Spirit CHL Import Draft pick Ilya Solovyov's has opened his first OHL campaign on a three-game point streak.  The Belarusian defenseman tallied his first career OHL goal in Saginaw's triumph Friday.

Solovyov is tied for first in the OHL with seven assists this season.  The defenseman is second in the league with eight points through three games this year.

New York Islanders seventh-round pick Cole Coskey has a goal in every Spirit game this season.  The right-winger's three goals lead all Saginaw Spirit players after three games.

Saginaw Spirit 2018 first round selection Cole Perfetti had two helpers in the game against Sarnia.  The 2020 NHL Draft top prospect had three goals and four assists in seven games against the Soo Greyhounds last season.

Minnesota Wild prospect Damien Giroux scored twice in the Saginaw victory Friday night.  The Saginaw Spirit captain has points in two of the three games this season.

Friday's contest will feature two of the hottest special teams in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) so far this season.

The Spirit have converted at a 33.3% clip on the man-power advantage this season.  Saginaw remains the only team in the OHL that has not surrendered a power play goal this season.

The Greyhounds have converted on three of the 15 man-power advantages in their three victories this season.  The Soo has given up just one power play goal in 12 shorthanded situations.

Jaromir Pytlik leads the Soo Greyhounds this season with seven points in three games.  The Czech center has contributed multi-point efforts in all three games for the Greyhounds.

Pytlik, Ryan Roth, Zach Trott, Cole MacKay, Ryan O'Rourke, Rory Kerins, and Cullen McLean are all tied for the Soo lead with two goals.

Five NHL prospects were returned to the Saginaw Spirit prior to the start of the regular season. Blade Jenkins (New York Islanders), Cole Coskey (New York Islanders), Nicholas Porco (Dallas Stars), Mason Millman (Philadelphia Flyers), and Damien Giroux (Minnesota Wild) have all been returned to the Spirit. Bode Wilde remains with the New York Islanders, while Ivan Prosvetov has been recalled by the Arizona Coyotes after a short stint in the AHL.

One of Sault Ste. Marie's two NHL prospects have returned to the club, defenseman Jacob LeGuerrier (Montreal Canadiens) has competed in all three Soo games this season.  2018 NHL fifth-overall pick Barrett Hayton remains with the Arizona Coyotes during the NHL's preseason.
