Hershey Bears News Release
It was do or die at GIANT Center Wednesday night. The BEARS battled to keep their season alive, defeating the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 3-2 overtime decision. Wilkes-Barre leads the series 3 games to 1.
Neither team would score in the first period, though both teams would have multiple chances. The BEARS would have two power plays in the first but failed to score on both. Jason Morgan would nearly pot a goal for the BEARS, but his shot ricocheted off the inside of the crossbar. Frederic Cassivi would make some key stops to keep the Penguins off the board.
The home team would find the score sheet at 9:00 of the second period, thanks to a power play marker from Alexandre Giroux. Giroux picked up his first goal of the series, with Eric Fehr and Sami Lepisto adding the helpers. HERSHEY would kill off a two-man deficit late in the third, and Cassivi would turn aside 16 shots in the second to keep Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scoreless. The BEARS held a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
The Baby Pens would find the back of the net, as Chris Minard notched a power play goal at 3:42 of the third period. The BEARS would answer with a power play goal of their own at 16:59. Jonathan Paiement fired a screamer past Wilkes-Barre goaltender John Curry for his first goal of the series, assisted by Andrew Gordon and Jay Beagle. With Curry to the bench late in the period, Minard would strike again for the visiting team, bringing the score to a 2-2 deadlock with 18.2 seconds left on the clock.
Giroux would be the hero for the BEARS Wednesday night, tallying the game winner just 20 seconds into overtime. It was the third overtime game-winning goal for Giroux against the Pens the last two playoff years.
Frederic Cassivi earned the win in net for HERSHEY, stopping 32 of 34 shots.
Notes: The BEARS will travel to Wilkes-Barre on Friday night for game 5 of the series, with puck drop slated for 7:05 p.m. Game 6, if necessary, is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 at GIANT Center, with a 7:00 face-off. Tickets are available at the GIANT Center box office or by calling (717) 534-3911. Eric Fehr was sent down from Washington for Wednesday night's game.
