Hillsboro Hops News Release

The Hillsboro Hops put together one of their more complete performances of the season to dampen a celebratory weekend in the Tri-Cities.

With the hometown Dust Devils sporting their Rooster Tails uniforms in commemoration of Water Follies weekend and the Columbia Cup hydro races, Hops starting pitcher Spencer Giesting spun an eight-inning gem as Hillsboro shut out Tri-City 3-0 Saturday at Gesa Stadium.

It was a career-night for the Hamilton, Ohio lefty and former UNC Charlotte 49er, who fanned ten batters and walked only one, scattering three hits, only two out of the infield. Liam Norris came on to slam the door in the ninth, fanning the side for his first career save.

Wilderd Patino stole at least two hits, maybe three, with superb catches in center field and drove in two of the Hops' three runs on the night on three base hits, reaching base four times in five trips to the plate. The Hops got quality defense all around the diamond on an error-free night, including a brilliant sliding stop up the middle by shortstop Juan Corniel to steal a hit from Matt Coutney.

Hillsboro outhit Tri-City 9-3 to take a three games to two lead in the six-game set. Eleven of the thirteen strikeouts came on breaking pitches, including all three of Norris' K's in the ninth.

The Hops have held Tri-City to five hits or less in all five games of the series, with shutouts in two of the past three games. In their two losses, Hilsboro outhit Tri-City 10-9.

Tuesday's starters return to the hill for Sunday's finale as Yilber Diaz takes the mound for the Hops and newly minted Angels' prospect Jorge Marcheco (MLB Pipeline #21) gets the call for the Rooster Tails. Pregame airtime is at 6:50 p.m. with first pitch at 7:05 Sunday on Rip City Radio 620 AM.
