Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped game three of the four-game series against San Jose, losing 6-1 on Sunday at LoanMart Field, where several unusual circumstances occurred.
The day's first bizarre string of events began in the second inning, when Giants first baseman Chris Shaw lined a ball down the right field line. Dodgers rehabber Scott Van Slyke - who was playing right field- threw his hands up to signal that the ball was trapped in the visiting bullpen in foul territory, but Shaw continued to round the bases. After field umpire Patrick Sharshel went out to investigate the situation, he ruled that the ball was still in play, resulting in a controversial inside-the-park home run for Shaw, his ninth home run of the season to make it 1-0 Giants.
Later in the second inning, Aramis Garcia singled, and Jonah Arenado hit a ground ball to shortstop. Garcia came in hard to second base and was ruled out on an illegal slide, making Arenado automatically out at first base. Second baseman Tim Locastro's knee hit Garcia's head as he was sliding into second base, injuring him and forcing him to leave the game. Because he was the starting catcher and the Giants' only other catcher on the roster, Andrew Susac, was the designated hitter, starting pitcher Jason Forjet had to hit after the Giants lost the DH as Susac was forced to catch.
In the fourth inning, the Giants scored five runs off Quakes' starter Yaisel Sierra. Steven Duggar and Susac singled to start the inning, and then Shaw blasted his second home run of the game, a three-run shot, and his third of the series to make it 4-0 San Jose. Then, C.J Hinojosa walked and Brandon Bednar hit a two-run home run, his third of the season to make it a 6-0 game. After Bednar's home run, Sierra was removed from the game with an apparent injury.
Rancho's only run of the game came on a Matt Beaty RBI single in the seventh inning. The Quakes could only muster one run on eight hits, including multi-hit games from Kyle Garlick , Beaty and Erick Mejia, who is now 6-for-9 in the series.
Van Slyke went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk in his rehab appearance. He played seven innings as scheduled before Joey Curletta took over in right field.
After Sierra (2-2) departed the scene with his injury after 3.2 innings, the Rancho bullpen continued their tremendous work. Jeff Malm threw 2.1 scoreless innings, and Bubby Rossman threw three scoreless and hitless innings.
Forjet (5-2) picked up the win for San Jose, going six innings, allowing just one earned run. He also went 0-for-2 at the plate with a strikeout, after Designated Hitter Andrew Susac was forced to take over behind the plate. Jose Morel, Jeff Soptic and Reyes Moronta each tossed a scoreless inning out of the Giants' bullpen.
The loss drops Rancho (29-15) to just one game ahead of High Desert in the South Division standings.
Coming up on Monday, it's another Social Media Monday at the ballpark. Fans that follow the Quakes on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook can take part in contests on the field and win great prizes! Andrew Sopko (5-0) will get the start and try to even the series for Quakes while Martin Agosta (2-0) will start for San Jose. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
