Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants have progressed on to the 2007 Western Hockey League Finals and will play the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Giants knocked off the Prince George Cougars last week to claim their second straight Western Conference Championship.
In Game 3 last Tuesday, the Giants posted a 4-1 win over the Cougars in Prince George. Wacey Rabbit, Lance Bouma, Spencer Machacek, and Kenndal McArdle all scored for Vancouver.
On Wednesday in Game 4, the Giants dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime to the Cougars. McArdle and Michal Repik scored the Giants goals on a night which saw Vancouver out-shoot Prince George 43-26. It was the Giants first playoff road loss in 14 straight games.
Last Friday at the Pacific Coliseum, the Giants wrapped up the series with a 5-1 win over the Cougars. The line of Rabbit (1g,1a), Repik (1g,2a), and Milan Lucic (1g,2a) combined for eight points. The Giants out-shot the Cougars 46-10 in the game and Rabbit was named the series Most Valuable Player, collecting six goals and two assists.
The Giants will now meet the Eastern Conference Champions Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL Finals. The Tigers, who defeated the Calgary Hitmen in five games, get an automatic berth in the MasterCard Memorial Cup.
During the regular season, the Giants and Tigers met twice with both games taking place in Medicine Hat. Vancouver won the first meeting 5-4 in overtime November 3 while the Tigers won the next match-up 3-2 on January 12. Four members of Canada's Gold Medal World Junior Team will be taking part in this series. McArdle and Cody Franson of the Giants along with Kris Russel and Darren Helm of the Tigers were teammates for Canada at the tournament in Sweden last winter.
This series will be a 2-3-2 format, starting in Medicine Hat this weekend. Game 1 will be Friday May 4 (6:30pm PST) while Game 2 goes Saturday May 5 (6:30pm PST). Game 3 will take place at the Pacific Coliseum Tuesday May 8 (7:00pm PST) while Game 4 goes Wednesday May 9 (7:00pm PST). If a Game 5 is required, it would be held Friday May 11 (7:30pm PST).
