Vancouver Giants News Release
For the second straight year, the Vancouver Giants have collected 100 points as they now prepare to open up the 2007 Western Hockey League playoffs next weekend.
In their final home game of the regular season last Friday, the Giants posted a 2-0 win over the Prince George Cougars. It was the 14th time this season the Giants kept the opposition off the scoreboard as goalie Tyson Sexsmith recorded his 10th shut-out of the season.
On Saturday, the Giants fell 2-0 in Everett against the Silvertips. It was just the fifth time this season the Giants failed to score a goal in game, despite out-shooting the Tips 29-11.
Last night, Vancouver pulled off a massive 5-4 comeback victory in overtime on the road against the Chilliwack Bruins. At one point, the Giants trailed 4-0, but Spencer Machacek led the rally with a pair of goals, including the winner on a power play with 14 seconds left in overtime! 15 year-old rookie Evander Kane scored his first goal in the WHL as the Giants wound up going 8-0-0-0 against the Bruins during the regular season.
The Giants finish off their sixth season in the WHL with a record of 45-17-3-7. 15 Giants players collected 20 or more points this season, which is a new franchise record. Milan Lucic finished the season as the Giants leading scorer (30g,38a). Sexsmith led all WHL goaltenders in goals against average (1.79) which is now a new club record. Defencemen Jonathaon Blum (+37) and Brett Festerling (+35) led the entire WHL in plus minus this season.
Vancouver will open defence of their WHL Playoff Championship next weekend as they take on the Chilliwack in the Western Conference Quarter Finals. Game 1 will go Friday March 23 at the Pacific Coliseum (7:30pm) while Game 2 goes Saturday March 24 (7:00pm). The series will shift to Chilliwack next week.
