Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants have seen their best ever regular season winning streak come to an end as they prepare for two more WHL games next weekend.
Last Friday, goalie Tyson Sexsmith registered his first shut-out of the season in a 3-0 win at home over the Seattle Thunderbirds. Milan Lucic, Cody Franson, and Tim Kraus scored for the Giants giving Vancouver their 10th win in a row. That streak put the Giants into a tie for the best regular season start in WHL history. The only other team to accomplish a 10-0-0-0 start was the Brandon Wheat Kings in the 1978-79 season.
On Saturday, the Giants dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime to the T-Birds at the Key Arena. Dustin Slade made 27 saves to help Vancouver earn a point on the road as for the first time this year, the Giants were out-shot by their opponents. The winning goal for Seattle came when the Giants had a power play in overtime. Thunderbirds forward Chris Durand dumped the puck in from the neutral zone off the left boards in the Giants territory. A funny bounce off the wall saw the puck deflect into the unguarded net as Slade had left the crease to anticipate the puck going to the corner.
The Giants remain the only team in the WHL to have taken points away in each game this season (10-0-1-0). They will have the week off for practice in prepartation for two home games next weekend. Friday October 20, Vancouver Canucks first round draft pick Michael Grabner and the Spokane Chiefs come to the Pacific Coliseum for the final time this seaso (7:30pm). Then on Saturday October 21, the Giants host the visiting Sasaktoon Blades (7:00pm).
