San Jose Giants News Release
LAKE ELSINORE, CA - The San Jose Giants were held to just two hits in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Lake Elsinore Storm on Sunday evening at The Diamond. It marked the first time in the second half that San Jose (56-57) had been shutout as the Giants dropped three out of four games in the series to Lake Elsinore and finished their road trip with a 3-4 record.
Storm starting pitcher Brad Wieck (1-4) picked-up his first California League win after tossing six innings with two hits allowed, three walks and six strikeouts. Three Lake Elsinore relievers then each fired a scoreless inning to complete the shutout.
Martin Agosta (4-7) returned from the disabled list to make the start on the mound for San Jose on Sunday. The right-hander took the loss after surrendering two runs (both earned) on eight hits over six innings. Agosta, who was making his first start since July 24, walked one and struck out six during his 78-pitch outing.
The Storm took an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the bottom of the first against Agosta. Auston Bousfield led off with a double into the left center field gap. Fernando Perez followed with a groundout to first advancing Bousfield to third before Nick Schulz hit a sacrifice fly to right plating the run.
San Jose's only two hits of the contest came in the top of the third. With one out, John Polonius lined a single into left center field. Christian Arroyo then drew a two-out walk before Aramis Garcia reached on an infield single when his bouncer back to the mound was not handled by Wieck. The hit loaded the bases, but Wieck induced the next hitter, Angel Villalona, to pop out to second ending the threat. The top of the third was also the only inning in which the Giants advanced a runner into scoring position.
Agosta pitched around a pair of singles in the bottom of the third using a double play to get out of the inning. In the fourth, Ryan Miller led off with a single and stole second with none out, but was stranded when the next three batters were retired. Lake Elsinore though pushed their lead to 2-0 when Donavan Tate led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to left. Agosta finished his night with a scoreless bottom of the sixth.
The Storm's final run came in the bottom of the seventh with Jeff Soptic (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) on the mound. Felipe Blanco drew a leadoff walk before moving to second on a passed ball. With one out, Bousfield singled to put runners on the corners and then a second passed ball in the inning plated Blanco to make it 3-0.
San Jose's only baserunner over the final five innings was a one-out walk to Tyler Horan in the top of the seventh. Brian Ragira though followed by lining out to second with Horan doubled off at first on the play to end the inning.
Eric Yardley and Jason Jester tossed perfect eighth and ninth innings respectively for the Storm to finish the game. Jester was credited with his fourth save of the season.
