High Desert Mavericks News Release

The San Jose Giants came into Thursday's game in a team-wide slump, but showed how Mavericks Stadium can be a cure-all for quiet bats, putting up 17 hits in a 7-5 win over the Mavericks.

The Giants had been hitting just .205 in their previous five games, but busted out of the slump in a big way. They had at least one hit every inning and took advantage of their opportunities, going 6-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

They collected a run on a pair of hits right away in the first inning. Michael Sandoval knocked an RBI single to make it 1-0.

The Mavs plated runs in the second and third to take the lead. Johermyn Chavez collected his team-leading 21st homer of the season in the second to tie game.

Following a triple by Kyle Seager, Edilio Colina broke the tie with a single in the third to make it 2-1.

The Giants took control of Wednesday's game in the fifth inning and did it again on Thursday. The first four men all reached safely, including a game-tying RBI single by Charlie Culberson.

Johnny Monell put the Giants ahead with a sac fly, and Wendell Fairley followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

San Jose plated a pair in the sixth. Francisco Peguero hit an RBI triple, and Sandoval followed with a sac fly.

Peguero ended up going 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Culberson led the Giants with four hits, despite collecting just three over his previous five games.

The Mavs responded in the bottom of the sixth and pulled within one. Jake Shaffer came through with a huge bases-clearing double with two outs to make it 6-5.

Just like Wednesday, the Giants converted a Maverick error into a run in the eighth. After Peguero reached on an error by Colina, he would score later in the inning on a single by Culberson to put the Giants up by two.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Mavs had they tying runs on with one out. Denny Almonte chased a 3-2 pitch that was high for strike three and the second out.

The Giants brought in closer Jason Stoffel, and after a wild pitch put the tying runs in scoring position, Stoffel got Shaffer to ground out and end the threat.

Stoffel then struck out the side in order in the ninth to earn his 14th save of the year.

Giants pitcher Oliver Odle became the first in the California League to 10 wins this season. Odle (10-3) allowed five runs over 5.2 innings while striking out a season-high eight.

Jake Wild had a better start than most of his recent ones at home, but still struggled and picked up the loss. Wild (6-4) surrendered four runs over five innings on 10 hits.

The Mavs will try to avoid being swept for a second time at home this year by the Giants Friday night at 7:05 p.m. It's Midway Home Solutions Family Feast Night, with all hot dogs and small sodas on sale for just $1! For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
