Quakes Rally For 7-4 Win In Ten

July 16, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Angel Castillo's three-run homer in the top of the tenth inning put the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in the driver's seat, as they knocked off the Bakersfield Blaze for a second straight game, winning on Thursday night by a final of 7-4 at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The Quakes rallied from a three-run deficit to win their third straight game, swatting three homers over the final four innings.

Alberto Rosario blasted a two-run shot in the seventh to make it a one-run game and Eric Oliver had a pinch-hit homer to tie the game in the eighth, helping the Quakes to force extras.

The Blaze broke down defensively, committing a pair of costly errors in the tenth. Luis Jimenez led off the tenth with a routine grounder to shortstop Andres James, whose throw to first was dropped by Erik Morrison. After an error on a pick-off attempt by pitcher Trevor Hurley (0-1) allowed Jimenez to move to second, Gabe Jacobo struck out for the first out. Oliver then grounded back to Hurley. On the play, Jimenez was caught between second and third, but stayed alive long enough for Oliver to take second base, which turned out to be a crucial play. With first base open and two outs, the Blaze elected to intentionally walk Clay Fuller, who was 0-for-4 on the night with three strikeouts. That turned out to be the wrong move, as Castillo followed by unloading his 11th homer of the year, tying him with Jacobo for the team-lead and giving the Quakes a 7-4 lead.

Eddie McKiernan allowed a lead-off single and a one-out walk in the bottom of the tenth, but got Jose Felix to line into a game-ending double-play, securing his 18th save of the year and second in as many nights against the Blaze.

Jeremy Berg (1-0) worked a scoreless ninth inning for the win.

The Blaze built a 4-1 lead over Quakes' starter Ryan Chaffee, thanks to home runs by David Paisano and Andres James.

Rosario took Blaze starter Carlos Pimentel deep in the seventh, his third homer in a Quakes' uniform this year, making it 4-3.

Oliver crushed the game-tying homer, his third in a Quakes' uniform in the eighth, the first pinch-hit home run for the Quakes this year, knotting the game at 4-4 against Blaze reliever Shane Zegarac.

Rancho Cucamonga (13-8, 52-39) now has the best second-half record in the entire California League and a two-game lead over the second-place High Desert Mavericks and Lake Elsinore Storm. The Quakes look for the series-sweep on Friday night, sending Matt Shoemaker (7-6) to the mound, opposite Blaze right-hander Kennil Gomez. Game time on Friday is 7:35pm.

On Tuesday, July 20th, the Quakes return to The Epicenter, opening a three-game home stand against Bakersfield. The upcoming home stand includes a GIVE Recycle Tuesday, an early-morning 10:35am game and a Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday. Tickets can be purchased by calling (909) 481-5000 or anytime online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter on Saturday night...Go Quakes!
