July 16, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release
Every San Jose starter recorded at least one hit as the Giants earned a 7-5 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday evening at Stater Bros. Stadium. San Jose finished the contest with 17 hits en route to their second straight win in the series and fifth consecutive victory against the Mavericks. With the win, the Giants improve their overall record to 52-39.
Charlie Culberson (4-for-5, 2 RBI, SB) had four singles while Francisco Peguero (3-for-5, 3B, RBI, 2 SB) reached base five times and hit his league-leading 11th triple of the year to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Drew Biery (3-for-5) added three hits for the Giants.
Oliver Odle (10-3) became the first 10-game winner in the California League this season after striking out a season-high eight batters over 5 2/3 innings. Odle surrendered five runs (all earned) on eight hits while also issuing one walk. David Quinowski (2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 SO) and Jason Stoffel (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) then combined for 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief to finish the game. Stoffel was credited with his 14th save of the year.
San Jose went ahead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth inning against Mavericks starter Jake Wild. Trailing by a 2-1 score, Peguero started the rally with a one-out single before stealing second base. After Michael Sandoval was hit by a pitch, Culberson singled sharply up the middle to plate Peguero with the tying run. Sandoval advanced to third while Culberson took second on the throw.
Johnny Monell then brought home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to deep left before Wendell Fairley's RBI single made it 4-2.
The Giants added two runs in the sixth as Juan Perez began the inning with a triple off the fence in center field. Perez scored two batters later on Peguero's triple into the left field corner. Sandoval followed with a sacrifice fly to center extending the lead to 6-2.
Odle had retired eight out of nine High Desert hitters until running into trouble with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Consecutive singles from Kuo Hui Lo and Rich Poythress started the rally before Johermyn Chavez drew a walk to load the bases. Odle recovered to strikeout Denny Almonte, but then Jake Shaffer lined a double into right center field to score all three runners and bring the Mavericks to within 6-5.
High Desert though would not manage another hit for the remainder of the night as Quinowski was summoned from the bullpen and he struck out Ralph Henriquez to end the inning.
After Quinowski worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, the Giants scored an insurance run in the eighth. Peguero led off by reaching on an error, advanced to second on Sandoval's groundout and scored on Culberson's fourth single of the contest.
In the bottom of the eighth, Quinowski issued a leadoff walk to Lo before a one-out walk to Chavez put the potential tying run on base. However, Quinowski then struck out Almonte before Stoffel entered the game and induced Shaffer to groundout weakly to second base.
Stoffel struck out all three batters that he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning to seal the victory.
Wild (6-4) suffered the loss for the Mavericks after surrendering 10 hits and four runs (all earned) in five innings of work.
The Giants took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Ehire Adrianza drew a one-out walk before Peguero singled to put runners on first and second. Sandoval followed with a sharp ground ball single into left plating Adrianza with the first run of the game.
High Desert tied the score in the bottom of the second on Chavez's 21st home run of the year - a solo shot to right field. Edilio Colina's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the third then gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Odle though settled down to fire a perfect bottom of the fourth before striking out the side in the fifth.
