
Giacomini Ties Game in Ninth

In their first extra inning game of the season the Calgary Vipers (40-24) defeated the Lake County Fielders (27-31) 8-5 at Fielders Stadium in Zion, Illinois. Trailing 5-4 in the ninth inning the Vipers received a solo home run from Jeff Giacomini to tie the game. Giacomini who came into the game in the seventh inning finished three-for-three and drove in a total of three runs after knocking in two more in the tenth inning.
Mike Burns (3-1) recorded the win after recording the final out in the ninth inning while Claudio Galva (16) earned the save with a scoreless tenth inning. Out of the bullpen both Dan Morari and Scott Watson were solid in tossing two innings and one and two-third innings scoreless.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning when Wilver Perez walked, stole second base, Jimmy Rohan was hit by a pitch, C.J. Ziegler singled in a run, Rohan scored on a wild pitch, and Ziegler scored on a throwing error for a 3-0 lead.
The Vipers added a run to the lead in the fifth frame as Jonny Kaplan walked, stole second base, and Jimmy Rohan singled in a run for a 4-0 advantage.
Lake County got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Alan Rick and Colin Moro singled, Franklyn Lopez collected a run batted in base hit, Derek Perren was intentionally walked to load the bases, John Dziomba was hit by a pitch for a RBI, and Sam Judah cleared the bases with a three-run double for a 5-4 lead.
In the top of the ninth inning Calgary tied the game at 5-5 with a leadoff home run from Jeff Giacomini for his first long ball of the season.
Calgary took back the lead in the tenth frame as Chad Ehrnsberger doubled, Lino Garcia walked, Drew Miller plated a run with a double, and Giacomini singled in two for a 8-5 advantage.
The Vipers continue this series in Illinois against the Lake County Fielders on Thursday August 4th with a spilt double-header at 10:30 AM and 6:00 PM MDT.
The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Friday August 12th at 6:30 to take on the Chico Outlaws.
