Edmonton Capitals News Release
Wailuku, HI - The Edmonton Capitals hit a pair of home runs as they extended their winning streak to six games on Tuesday night with a 3-1 win over Maui Na Koa Ikaika in their first of nine games in a row at Maehara Stadium.
Centre fielder Steve Brown and shortstop Rex Rundgren each blasted solo home runs to lead the Caps past Maui in the series opener, while Rundgren also hit an RBI single to account for the team's other run, scored by catcher J.D. Closser, who put himself in scoring position with a triple.
Starting pitcher Rory Shortell continued to be an absolute force on the mound for the Caps, as he tossed 5.1 innings and gave up just one run on four hits while striking out five Maui batters. Shortell started the season in Edmonton's bullpen, but he quickly proved himself as a capable starter and is now 8-3 on the North American League season. Tom Boleska pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Caps, giving up just one hit while earning six strikeouts.
Since the Calgary Vipers and Lake County Fielders were rained out in Lake County on Tuesday, the Caps gained half a game on the Vipers in the North Division standings. Edmonton improved to 37-25, while Calgary is 39-24, putting the teams just 1.5 games apart. Maui currently sits in last place in the division with a 26-35 record.
The Caps and Na Koa Ikaika square off again tonight for game two of their nine-game series, starting at 11 p.m. MT. The teams play every day until next Tuesday, including a Sunday double-header, and the Caps return home on Friday, August 12 to open a six-game series against Jose Canseco and the Yuma Scorpions. The opener is another Fireworks Friday presented by 92.5 JOE FM.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer, featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Flex packs are available in multiples of eight for $48 less than day-of-game pricing. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
