San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - After being dominated by Santo Hernandez in their last game in Laredo, the San Angelo Colts were shut down by another masterful performance on Thursday, as the Harlingen WhiteWings ended a 10-game losing streak with a 10-4 win in front of 2,003 fans at Foster Field behind the strong outing of righty Alex Gett.

Gett (3-7) retired the first 10 batters he faced, striking out eight total as he fell just one out short of his first complete game of the year. He also was helped by three double plays, two of which were through the air. Gett only walked four, as he tired in the ninth inning and allowed three runs, but was dominant through the first eight.

Frank James (3-5) was solid for the Colts (36-25) through the first three innings, facing just one over the minimum. But he gave up five hits and three runs in the fourth, including three straight two-out RBI singles by Trey Hendricks, Brian Nichols, and Anthony Slagle. The WhiteWings (18-45) got another run in the sixth off James, who allowed four runs on eight hits through seven innings, but he walked a season-high six batters.

Harlingen broke the game open with six runs (four earned) off Matt Greanead in the ninth, as Greanead walked three in the frame, allowed four hits, and gave up two unearned runs when Jose Torres and Bryan Frichter collided in right-center field, allowing a fly ball to drop with the bases loaded.

The Colts' two best threats while the game was still close were in the fifth and seventh innings. In the fifth, Aaron Cone doubled with one out and Jason Landreth was hit by a pitch. But Bryan Frichter struck out and Wyn Diggs lined out to center to end the inning.

In the seventh, Jose Torres led off with a double, and was brought home with an RBI single by Andres Rodriguez. But Cone hit into a 6-4-3 double play, and Landreth fouled out to catcher Kevin Griffin to end the frame.

The Colts scored three in the ninth off Gett, but John Anderson grounded out with the bases loaded to end the potential huge comeback. The win for the WhiteWings was just the second for Caleb Balbuena in 17 games since he took over as Harlingen manager in late June.

Notes: Diggs extended his now 31-game on-base streak, which leads the United League, with an eighth-inning single...Cone extended his on-base streak to 19...Birthday boy Jack Chapman (23 years old) pinch-hit in the ninth and drew a bases-loaded walk...James turned 28 yesterday...Tyrone Pendergrass (shoulder) sat out his second straight game since leaving the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against Laredo after a great diving catch.

The Colts continue their six-game set with Harlingen on Friday, July 25, at 7:05 p.m. CT. After the game, the Colts will have a live auction for the special camouflage jerseys they will be wearing during the game. All proceeds will go to the Concho Valley Partnership. Advertising, ticket, and group information are available by calling the box office at (325) 942-6587.
