THE GAME:

The 2005 Southern Division Champion Georgia Force host their final regular season home game on Saturday, May 8th at 7 pm when the Dallas Desperados come to Philips Arena.

With a perfect 7-0 record at Philips Arena this season, the Force are only one of two teams in the League with an undefeated mark at home (Tampa Bay, 7-0). Since the AFL extended its regular season schedule from 14 games to 16 games prior to the start of the 2003 season, no team has gone undefeated at home. Georgia is also currently riding a nine game home winning streak dating back to last season.

Last week, the Force clinched their first division title and became the first team in the AFL to secure a playoff berth in the Drive to ArenaBowl XIX. Holding a League-best 10-4 overall record, Georgia can clinch the top seed in the National Conference and have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a victory over Dallas AND a New York loss to Tampa Bay.

Saturday's game will be a classic my offense vs. your defense battle, as Dallas enters the contest with the AFL's third best scoring offense averaging 53.9 points per game. Georgia, on the other hand, carries the League's second best scoring defense only allowing 45.4 points per game.

THE OPPONENT:

Dallas comes into their match-
up with Georgia in the midst of
a two game losing streak
following losses to New York
and Las Vegas. The Desperados
currently stand sixth in the
National Conference standings
with only the top four teams
advancing, so each game becomes increasing important in regards to their playoff hopes. The Desperados are led by Rookie of the Year candidate QB Clint Stoerner, who has thrown for 67 touchdowns and over 3,400 yards this season. Dallas WR/LB Jason Shelley leads the club with 85 receptions for 1,061 yards and 23 touchdowns.

GEORGIA FORCE NEXT WEEK:

The Force conclude the 2005 regular season when they travel to cross-country to face the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats on Saturday, May 21st at 10:30 p.m. ET. The SaberCats lead the all-time series 2-1. The game will be televised locally on FSN South.

As a starter this year, Nagy has thrown at least four touchdowns in all 9 games.

Against the Wranglers, Nagy truly went from holding a clip broad to stepping into the game and completing his first 10 passes. The Force would go on to win on a last second 49-yard field goal by Nelson Garner.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING:

When the Georgia Force clinched the 2005 Southern Division championship, not only were they setting a first in team history for the club, but also for their home venue.

By winning the division title, the Force secured a first round home playoff game to be played on May 29th. In the six year history of Philips Arena, no team in any sport has ever played a playoff game within the venue.

HEAD COACHES:

DOUG PLANK, Georgia (10-4, 1st Year): On July 30, 2004, Doug Plank was announced as the new head coach of the Georgia Force becoming the fourth head coach in the team's history. Plank comes to the Force having served as the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Rattlers from 2002-2004, which included three consecutive ArenaBowl championship game births.

Following a 3-5 start in 2004, the Rattlers turned their season around to finish with a league-tying best 11-5 record and secure the top seed in the AFL playoffs. In 2002, Plank helped guide the Rattlers defense to a number one regular season ranking in rushing defense and scoring defense. In his three years with the Rattlers, he coached four First Team All-Arena selections, two Second Team All-Arena players and four All-Ironman Team choices, including 2003 AFL Ironman of the Year Randy Gatewood.

A former member of The Ohio State University football team, Plank played in three consecutive Rose Bowls, 1973, 1974, and 1975. While at Ohio State, he played for legendary coach Woody Hayes.

Plank brings with him a wealth of football experience that includes an impressive career in the NFL. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 12th round of the 1975 NFL Entry Draft and started at safety for eight seasons. The "46 Defense" created by Buddy Ryan was named for Plank's jersey number and aggressive style of play. Plank was also the first Bears rookie to ever lead the team in tackles.

Following his playing career, Plank became a franchisee for the Burger King Corporation owning and operating 17 restaurants in three different states.

Plank's professional history also includes experience as a member of the Rattlers broadcast team. Prior to becoming defensive coordinator, he spent five years as the Rattlers' radio analyst and two seasons as their television color analyst.

His broadcasting experience also includes stints with the Arizona Cardinals, Arizona State University Football, Fox Sports Net, Westwood One and Sports USA Radio Network.

WILL McCLAY, Dallas (14-15-1, 2nd Year): Will McClay is in his second year as the Desperados Head Coach. He was promoted to lead the team three days before kicking off the 2004 AFL season following the resignation of Joe Avezzano. He also serves as the team's defensive coordinator, a position he has held since the team's inaugural season in 2002. In the AFL off season, McClay works in the Dallas Cowboys Player Personnel Department.

Prior to moving to Dallas, McClay was the Assistant Director of Pro Scouting with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2001) and Player Personnel Director of the XFL's Orlando Rage (2001). He was the Grand Rapids Rampage Defensive Coordinator/Director of Player Personnel (1998-99) after serving in the same capacity for the Anaheim Piranhas (1997). He served as the Defensive Coordinator for the Florida Bobcats (1996) and the Milwaukee Mustangs (1995) after beginning his coaching career with the Detroit Drive (1993).

McClay was a WR/DB with Detroit from 1989-92, helping them win three ArenaBowl championships.

LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET:

DULTUH, GA. (5/10/03) - The Georgia Force (8-7) were defeated by the Dallas Desperados (9-6) by one-point 56-55 as Force kicker Steve McLaughlin's 58-yard field goal fell short as time expired. Dallas quarterback Jim Kubiak was named the game's MVP completing 22-of-30 passing for 260 yards and six touchdowns.

Georgia offensive specialist Tyronne Jones established a new career-high with 165 receiving yards on nine catches and three touchdowns on the night. Force quarterback Leon Murray also set two new single-game team records for passing yards with 354 yards and eight touchdowns. He finished the contest, completing 21-of-37 passing. The loss was Georgia third straight defeat at home and its first against a Central Division opponent this season.

Both teams came out of the gates firing as each team only needed two plays each on their offensives series to put points on the board. Dallas grabbed an early 7-0 lead when Kubiak connected with Dialleo Burks for a 28-yard touchdown. The Force answered as Murray hit Jones on a 3-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 7-7. On the Desperados next drives, Kevin Gaines intercepted Kubiak in the Force end zone giving Georgia the game's first turnover. The Force could not capitalize though as Steve McLaughlin missed a 31-yard field goal attempt. Kubiak and Burks teamed up one more time in the quarter, this time for a three-yard TD pass to give Dallas a 14-7 as the first quarter ended.

McLaughlin missed his second field goal of the game, this one a long attempt from 55-yards, on the Force's first drive of the second quarter. Dallas turned the opportunity into points as Kubiak threw on third touchdown of the game finding Will Pettis for a six-yard score. On Georgia's ensuing possession, Murray executed another quick scoring drive throwing a 48-yard bomb to Jones to cut the Desperados lead. McLaughlin missed the following PAT attempt to leave the score 21-13 Dallas. The Desperados pushed their lead back up to 15 points at 28-13 when Jeremy Beutler rushed in from one-yard out with 20 seconds left in the quarter. To end the first half in dramatic fashion, Murray deliver another long touchdown pass. With four seconds left in the half, Murray threw up a hail mary in the end zone that was tipped by a Dallas defender and hauled in by Darryl Hammond. McLaughlin hit the PAT as the Desperados took a 28-20 halftime lead.

The second half began as a repeat of the way the first half closed without the drama. Murray connected with Hammond on a 10-yard touchdown pass. The Force failed on its two-point conversion attempt leaving the score at

28-26 Dallas. The Desperados continued their offensive success scoring the game's next 14-points. Kubiak first found Andy McCullough for a nine-yard score giving Dallas a 35-26 advantage. On Georgia's next drive, Tim Denton intercepted Murray in the end zone forcing the home team's first turnover of the game. The Desperados made good on the gift taking two plays before Kubiak hit Jason Shelley on a 34-yard TD and a 42-26 lead.

Hammond and Murray teamed up again for their third touchdown to end the Force drought and start the fourth quarter. Murray hit Jones for a successful two-point conversion and the Dallas lead stood at 42-34. Georgia cut the lead to two points at 42-40 when Murray found Jarrick Hillery streaking down the sideline for a 45-yard touchdown. The Force attempted an on-side kick, but an offsides penalty negated a successful recover by Georgia. Dallas scored three plays later on a Kubiak to Pettis two-yard touchdown pass. Jones caught his third score of the game from Murray on a 27-yard pass leaving the score 49-47 Desperados with 2:09 left in the game. Georgia attempt its second on-side kick of the game this time, as Denton returned the attempt eight-yards for a score and a 56-47 Dallas advantage. Hammond, later named the game's Ironman, hauled in his fourth touchdown, a three-yard pass from Murray. Murray made good on the two-point attempt and the score stood at 56-55. The Georgia defense stepped up with only 30 seconds remaining in the game, as Dallas attempted to run out the clock. The Force D halted Beutler twice, on second and third down, from gaining positive yardage stopping the clock from running as Georgia had no timeouts remaining. After one incomplete pass, McLaughlin came on the try for the win, but his attempt fell short.

FORCE LAST WEEK:

ATLANTA, GA – The Georgia Force (10-4) claimed the 2005 Southern Division Championship with a 52-40 victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (8-6). The Force become the first team in the AFL this season to clinch a playoff berth and are the first club to reach double-digit wins on the year.

The win ups the Force's home record to a perfect 7-0 on the year and increases their home winning streak to nine games dating back to last season.

Georgia WR/LB Chris Jackson finished with a game-high 12 reception for 130 yards and three touchdowns, including a seven-yard score with 30 seconds left in the game to seal the victory. Jackson, named U.S. Army Ironman of the Game, added a 56-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and also rushed for a score. For Tampa Bay, QB Shane Stafford threw for a game-high 337 yards on 22-of-42 passing with 6 touchdowns, but tossed 2 interceptions, both picked by Force DS Ricky Packer.

The game was tied 6-6 following the first quarter of play as each team scored on touchdown passes and missed PAT attempts. The Georgia defense made the contest's first stop as Parker intercepted a Stafford pass in the end zone. The Force capitalized on the turnover when FB/LB Robert Thomas rushed in from one yard out to give Georgia a 13-6 lead. Tampa Bay closed the scoring gap when OS Demetris Bendross hauled in his second touchdown of the half, but a second missed PAT attempt by the Storm left the score a 13-12. The Force pushed their lead to eight points, 20-12, on a QB Matt Nagy to Jackson five-yard strike on fourth-down. With seven seconds remaining before the half, Tampa Bay K Matt George connected on a 23-yard field goal attempt as Georgia took a 20-15 after two quarters of play.

The Force built their largest lead of the game at 32-15 with 14 straight points to start the third quarter. Georgia OS Troy Bergeron caught his second touchdown and Jackson pulled in his second score of the game on a four and two-yard passes respectively. Between the two Force drives, Parker grabbed his second interception of the game from Stafford. The Storm closed the quarter with a 34-yard touchdown strike to WR/LB Lawrence Samuels and a successful on-side kick recovery on the ensuing kickoff.

Each team traded three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, starting with Samuels' second scoring catch from Stafford from 6-yards out. Jackson scored three touchdowns in the final quarter on two touchdown receptions and his kickoff return for a score. The Storm tacked on a final touchdown as the clock expired on a two-yard strike to WR/DB Clif Dell, but still fell to even the season's series at 1-1.
