Notes From the Dragons Lair

FLORIDA CONNECTIONS:
WR/LB Sir Mawn Wilson is from Tampa Bay, FL and played with the storm from 2001 to 2002. Practice Squad OL/DL Tyronn Johnson attended college at Florida A&M.

WIN AND WE'RE IN:
The Dragons can clinch their third consecutive Eastern Division Championship two ways. The most straight forward is a win against Tampa Bay this week. The second is a Dallas loss to the Georgia Force. If the Dragons fail to clinch this week, they can in Week Seventeen with a win over Colorado or a Dallas loss to Philadelphia.

THE BIG EAST:
With a victory over Columbus this past week, the Dragons swept the entire Eastern Division with a perfect 6-0 record. Their win coupled with a Dallas loss now gives the Dragons a 1.5 games lead over the Desperados for the division crown.

SWAYNE'S PERFECT RECORD:
Despite OS Kevin Swayne leaving two games early in the first quarter due to injury, the Dragons have a perfect 6-0 record in games that he has appeared in. Swayne missed the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury and six games in the middle of the season with a separated shoulder.

DRAGONS SET NEW RETURN RECORD:
The Dragons' special teams have been tops in the league when it comes to returning kicks in 2005.
In their Week Fifteen victory over Columbus, the Dragons returned their eleventh kick for a touchdown, setting a new combined kickoff return record. WR/LB Chris Anthony returned an onsides kick of a 13-yard touchdown. WR/DB Will Holder is tied with San Jose's WR Rashid Davis and Dallas' WR/DB Will Pettis for the league lead in return touchdowns with four. WR/DB Corey Johnson is tied for second in the league with three. WR/DB DaShane Dennis has a total of two for the season while OS Markeith Cooper and WR/LB Chris Anthony each have one. As a team, the Dragons lead the league in this category with a total of eleven.

MR. 700:
QB Aaron Garcia threw five touchdown passes in Week 14 at Dallas to become the first player in professional football history to record 700-or-more career passing touchdowns. The score came on a 37-yard toss to OS Kevin Swayne in the first quarter. Garcia now has 711 touchdowns in his illustrious career.

GARCIA FIRST IN TD'S, SECOND IN COMPLETIONS AND YARDS:
Dragons QB Aaron Garcia is in his 11th AFL season and remains one of the league's top passers. He remains first all-time with 7011 touchdowns and has moved ahead of Arizona Rattlers' QB Sherdrick Bonner to second in all-time passing yards with 34,119. Garcia is currently second all-time with 2,893 pass completions.
The All-Arena QB reached the 650 plateau vs. Arizona on February 27. Last year on April 18 vs. the Colorado Crush, Garcia became the first professional football player to throw for 600 career touchdowns.

TOUCHDOWN MACHINE:
Just because QB Aaron Garcia is getting older it doesn't mean he's slowing down. Going back to the 2004 season, Garcia has thrown the second highest amount of the touchdowns in the AFL with 167. He trails only Philadelphia Soul QB Tony Graziani who has 179 over the past two seasons.

Player Touchdowns
Tony Graziani 179
Aaron Garcia 167
Andy Kelly 157
John Kaleo 149
Clint Dolezel 139

HIGH RATINGS:
QB Aaron Garcia is quietly having a standout season. Entering Week Sixteen, Garcia is the second highest rated quarterback in the AFL with a QB Rating of 118.3. For the season, he has completed 298 of 453 passes for a 65.8 completion percentage.

THE WINNING EDGE:
The Third Quarter: For the Dragons, taking a lead into the third quarter is one of three keys to victory. Entering Week Sixteen, the Dragons are 7-1 when leading after the third quarter and are 0-4 when trailing. When tied after the third, the Dragons are 2-0.
50-Points: The second key to a Dragons' victory in 2005 is scoring 50 points. The team has scored at least 51 points in each of their nine wins, including four games of 60-plus points.
Turnovers: The third key to a Dragons' victory is the turnover margin. When the team has a plus or even turnover margin against their opponents, their record is 7-1 compared to 1-4 when it's a negative margin.

"ZEUS" IS RUNNING STRONG:
Second year FB/LB Josh "Zeus" White is running through the AFL. He is currently tied for third in the league in rushing scores with 12 and is fourth in yards with 178. The Dragons record for rushing touchdowns is 15, set by QB Aaron Garcia in 1999.

DRAGONS KEEP TAKING, BUT DON'T GIVE:
The Dragons' offense hasn't turned the ball over much this season and the defense has forced 28 turnovers. That makes for a fire breathin' combination in terms of the giveaway-takeaway differential. Entering Week Sixteen, the Dragons are tied for third in the league with a plus-six ratio, 28 to 19.

ANGEL IN THE BACKFIELD:
DS Chris Angel isn't letting too many receivers get past him in the backfield. The second year veteran is currently fourth in the league with 89.5 tackles, 77 of which were solo, and tied for thirteenth with twelve passes defended. In Week Fifteen versus Columbus, Angel recorded 6.5 tackles and two breakups.

QUARTERBACKS GETTING BURNED:
The Dragons' defense has been outstanding in 2005. They currently lead the league in team interceptions with 24. In Week Fifteen versus Columbus, WR/DB Will Holder recorded two interceptions and WR/DB Corey Johnson added his seventh pick of the season. All but three of the Dragons' defensive turnovers have come from interceptions.
WR/DB Corey Johnson and DS Bill Parker are currently in a three-way tie with Nashville's DS Kahlil Carter for the league-lead with seven. WR/DB Will Holder is tied for 24th with three while DS Chris Angel and WR/LB/OS Mike Horacek are tied for 37th with two each. WR/DBs DaShane Dennis and Will Holder along with WR/LB Chris Anthony and FB/LB Josh "Zeus" White each have one.

BILLY THE KID:
DS Billy Parker is certainly making waves throughout the AFL. In his first two AFL games, Parker recorded three interceptions and was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game in both contests. He has also won that honor in weeks thirteen and fourteen. Through Week Fifteen, the former William & Mary standout is tied for league lead in interceptions with seven. He has recorded 78.5 tackles, the most for any rookie and eighth highest in the league. Parker is also tied for sixth in the league with 15 passes defended.

KICKIN' IT:
The Dragons know K Rob Bironas has a strong leg and it's paying off. Entering Week Fifteen, Bironas is second in the league with 44 touchbacks.

ARENA-BRED COACHES:
The Dragons are one of two teams in the league this season to have their entire coaching staff comprised of former AFL players. They share the distinction with the Philadelphia Soul. In total, the Dragons' coaching staff has a combined 22 years of AFL playing experience and another combined 14-plus years as coaches.

LIVING YOUNG:
In the off-season the Dragons hired a defensive-minded head coach, who also happens to be the youngest in professional football. Weylan Harding enters the 2005 season at 33 years old, 23 months and four days younger than the second-youngest head coach – New Orleans's Mike Neu. However, Harding does not hold the distinction of being the youngest coach in league history. That honor goes to Kevin Guy of the 2000 New Jersey Red Dogs, who was 27 years old.

TEAM COACH DOB AGE
NYD Harding 1/5/1972 33
NOV Neu 12/9/1970 34
LAA Hodgkiss 10/23/1970 34
PHI Fuller 8/5/1969 35
GRR McEwen 4/28/1968 37

COLISEUM MADNESS:
For the second consecutive season the Dragons set a new single-game franchise attendance record. The organization started off the 2005 season on February 6, 2005 with a packed house of 14,925, which is the complete Arena Football capacity for the Nassau Coliseum. Through seven home games, the Dragons attendance figure for this season is 83,425.

IRON DRAGONS:
Two Dragons have been honored with the US Army Ironman of the Week award in 2005. WR/LB Mike Horacek was given the honor in Week Five in the Dragons' 61-36 victory over the Arizona Rattlers when he recorded five receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns. However, his biggest contribution came on defense when he intercepted a fourth quarter pass from Rattlers' QB Sherdrick Bonner and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.
Two weeks later in Week Seven, WR/DB Corey Johnson was honored with the award for his stellar play versus the Georgia Force. He had three touchdowns along with an interception and played in every offensive and defensive series. Johnson returned two kicks for scores from 55 and 57 yards, respectively, and caught another for a total of three. He was also a playmaker defensively, by recording 4.0 tackles with one interception. He finished with game-high 258 total yards.

DEFENSE GOT IT DONE VS. ARIZONA:
The Dragons' defense tied an AFL record in their game versus the Arizona Rattlers by recording six interceptions. WR/DB Corey Johnson hauled in a pair in the first half while DS Chris Angel, WR/LB Mike Horacek, DS Billy Parker and FB/LB Josh White all added one a piece. The defense recorded eight defensive stops including a turnover on downs on the Rattlers' first drive of the game.

ORIGINAL DRAGONS:
FB/LB Chin Achebe and QB Aaron Garcia are New York Dragons through thick and thin. The duo consists of the only two that have played with the team for each of its first five seasons on Long Island. Both Achebe and Garcia made the move when the Iowa Barnstormers relocated to New York prior to the 2001 season.
Achebe has spent each of his six AFL seasons with the franchise as he made his league debut as a Barnstormer in 2000. Garcia was traded to Iowa from New Jersey on June 2, 1998 for WR/DB Chris Spencer and OL/DL John Dixon. This is Garcia's 11th AFL season and eighth with the franchise.
OS Kevin Swayne has been the property of the Dragons for all five seasons, however he spent two seasons on the exempt list from 2002-2004. After a successful 2001 campaign, he was signed by the NFL's New York Jets and stayed there for three seasons. He returned to the Dragons mid-way through the 2004 season. Swayne also suited up for the Barnstormers from 1998-1999.
WR/LB Mike Horacek is the only other player to have played for both the Barnstormers and the Dragons. From 1997 to 2000, Horacek split time as a WR/DB and an OS with Iowa. He was the AFL's Offensive Player of the Year in 2000, his last with the team until he was selected in 2004 Dispersal Draft. The 2005 season is his first with the Dragons, but fifth with the franchise.
WR/DB Todd Doxzon was also a member of the 2001 Dragons. He spent three seasons with the Dragons from 2001 to 2003 before leaving via free
agency in 2004. The veteran Ironman resigned with the Dragons on April 19.

Players to Watch

THREE FIRE BREATHIN' DRAGONS:
QB Aaron Garcia: One of the most prolific passers in the history of the AFL always gives his team a chance to win. In Week Fifteen's win over Columbus, Garcia threw for 307 yards and seven touchdowns. He has now thrown for 711 touchdowns in his AFL career.
FB/LB Josh "Zeus" White: The second-year pro is proving to the league that he is one of the better players at his position. He leads the Dragons in rushing and is tied for fourth in the league with 175 yards and third with 12 touchdowns. Last week in a win over Columbus, White caught a short pass and turned it into a 26-yard touchdown.
WR/DB Corey Johnson: Returning from a knee injury is last week's win over Dallas, Johnson made his mark right away by picking off a pass in the second quarter. He is now tied for the league-lead in interceptions with seven and gives the Dragons a huge boost defensively.

Inside the Headset

Every Monday, Dragons head coach Weylan Harding lets the fans get inside his headset in an open question and answer forum. Here's a compilation of this seasons' journal.

Coach, you are just one win away from the Eastern Division championship. How important is it to lock up a playoff spot this week? Would you rest some players in the last week of the season?

Harding: It is very important that we continue to focus on winning one game at a time and let everything sort itself out. The assessment as far as resting players would be based on the need at that time.

How big of a boost was it to have WR/DB Corey Johnson back in the lineup this week?

Harding: Corey's attitude and veteran leadership are things that add to the team. He has a certain presence that his teammates respond to in a positive way. It was definitely good to see #27 on the field.

Coach, if you were to choose three words to describe your defense, what would they be?

Harding: Tough, Physical and Opportunistic.

What are you looking towards in Tampa Bay this weekend?

Harding: We know that Tampa Bay is traditionally a solid team and that they are representatives of a tough Southern Division. We need to put a solid effort together in order to have a chance at winning in a place where they have been extremely comfortable at. The bottom line is that Tampa stands between us and we want. Now we have to go get it.
