Oshawa Generals News Release
Oshawa, Ontario - The Generals got back on the winning path Sunday night. They thumped Peterborough 5-2 before a crowd of 5,067 strong at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa. A critical first period penalty kill and a second period power play goal were the keys to victory. Scott Laughton and Emerson Clark scored two goals each, and Christian Thomas had a 3 point evening. The victory puts the Generals in sole possession of the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot. It also puts Oshawa just 1 point back of Peterborough and Mississauga for 6th place in the Eastern Conference.
The Petes' offence crashed the party moments later at 1:37. Peterborough sustained strong pressure, cycled the puck and scored the opening marker on a scramble from the slot. Andrew Yogan did the honours giving the Petes an early 1-0 lead.
Oshawa's fortunes became more dreary when they were assessed a 5-minute-major for goaltender interference. Showing great resolve, the Gens killed it off. Scott Sabourin stood out in his penalty-killer-role and did everything possible to disrupt the flow of Peterborough's shooters.
Sensing a change in momentum, Geoffrey Schemitsch manoeuvred across the Petes' blue-line and drove towards the net. Schemitsch dropped the puck to Christian Thomas who torqued his trade-mark snap-shot far side. Petes' goaltender, Mike Morrison never stood a chance. Before he could blink, the puck was in the corner pocket of the net.
Early in the second, Bailie was the bedrock that bound the back end together. Flashing the leather, the Gens' goaltender stifled a howitzer destined for the top right corner. His solid play provided Oshawa with the opportunity to pounce.
The Generals' power play got two more kicks at the can, and at 14:01, they finally made it count. Thomas flew down the right side and swung a perfect cross-ice-pass to Scott Laughton who made no mistake. Laughton buried his 11th of the season, a one-timer stick side that gave Morrison no time to react. Oshawa was up 2-1.
Once again, Oshawa's penalty kill was perfect in the middle frame: it closed gaps, isolated forecheckers, and afforded Bailie the time and space needed to read the puck. At the end of 2, the Generals headed to the dressing room with their 1-goal-advantage intact.
In the third period, the Generals firmly set their sights on Peterborough's net. The result was the three consecutive Oshawa goals that ensured victory.
The Gens cashed in at 5:33. Emerson Clark was the culprit. In the tradition of Bobby Orr, he tucked home the puck as he flew by the net in the air. The 3-1 goal was extra sweet with John Urbanic assisting on the play. The point was Urbanic's first in the OHL.
Oshawa got downright pretty at 6:20. Laughton scored his second of the night nailing a shot from the slot. The goal was the crown jewel of a beautiful three-part-passing-play. Thomas fed Sebastian Uvira who walked around a defender before delivering Laughton his mail.
Clark capped off his night by whipping a shot from the hash marks making it 5-1 Gens. Peterborough potted one in the dying minutes, but the damage had already been done. The Gens were 5-2 winners.
Oshawa outshot Peterborough 36-32 on the night.
The Generals swept the 3 star selections. Laughton, Thomas and Clark were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd stars respectively.
Oshawa heads back to the nation's capital this Friday February 3rd to take on the 67's for a 7:30 PM start. Catch the action live on Rogers TV Durham.
Oshawa's next home game is at a special start time on Super Bowl Sunday. Sunday February 5th, the Generals square off against the Guelph Storm at 2:05 PM. It's the perfect lead-in-activity to your Super Bowl plans.
