
Majors Caught by Wolves 4-1

Three unanswered goals in the second period by the Sudbury Wolves proved costly to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors on Sunday afternoon.
Michael Sgarbossa, Josh McFadden and Nathan Pancel each scored for the Wolves in the second period and Andrey Kuchin tallied a fourth Sudbury goal in the third period to rally past the Majors 4-1 in front of of 2,101 fans at the Hershey Centre in Ontario Hockey League play.
With the victory, the Wolves (25-17-3-1) kept hold of fifth spot in the Eastern Conference standings with 54 points. The Majors (22-20-1-5) remain three points ahead of the idle Belleville Bulls for seventh place in the East.
Mika Partanen opened the scoring with his eleventh goal of the season from Dylan DeMelo and Trevor Carrick to give the Majors a 1-0 lead at 15:03 of the opening period and carried their lead into the second period but it was then that the Wolves took charge of the scoresheet.
Sgarbossa tied the game with his 28th goal of the season just 1:27 into the period from Joshua Leivo and McFadden. The former Major, McFadden, then responded with a goal of his own ? his sixth of the season ? which turned out to be the eventual game winner, giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead from Sam Shutt and Nicholas Baptiste at 7:26. Pancel closed out the second period scoring for the Wolves at 14:34, assisted by Baptiste, to give Sudbury a 3-1 lead.
Shots were 12-12 after the first period of play, and 23-22 in favour of the Wolves after forty minutes.
Kuchin put the Wolves up 4-1 at the 3:38 mark of the third period, his 16th of the season, from Frank Corrado and the Wolves never looked back, outshooting the Majors 6-3 in the period and 29-25 overall.
The game marked the first time Derek Schoenmakers and Kristoff Kontos faced off against their former teams following a trade between the Majors and Wolves on January 5th.
Johan Mattsson picked up the win in goal for Sudbury, stopping 24 of 25 shots. Brandon Maxwell suffered just his first loss in five starts, allowing four goals on 29 shots.
Both teams were unsuccessful on the powerplay, with the Majors going 0-for-5 and the Wolves going 0-for-3.
The Majors are back in action on Friday, February 3rd when they take on their divisional rival Barrie Colts at 7:30 p.m. at the Hershey Centre. Tickets are available online at www.ticketmaster.ca, or in person at the Hershey Centre box office.
