Oshawa Generals News Release

The Generals opened the new year this afternoon at home as they took on the Kingston Frontenacs at the Tribute Communities Centre. With a win on Friday against the Steelheads and a tough loss at home on Sunday night against the Ottawa 67's, the Gens entered the game with a 21-13-2-0 record on the season. Looking to start 2019 off on the right foot, the Gens aimed to take down the Fronts in the first game of the new year.

1st Period:

The Gens started the game by taking a high-sticking penalty just over a minute into the period to give the Frontenacs the first powerplay of the contest. However, it was Oshawa that had offensive success shorthanded, with Anthony Salinitri burying a loose puck after Serron Noel carried it to the front of the net. After their penalty expired, the Gens kept up the pressure on the Fronts and were rewarded with another goal off a perfect wrist shot from the slot from Kyle MacLean, putting Oshawa up 2-0. After extending the lead, the Gens got called for a tripping penalty that Kingston was able to capitalize on off a slapshot goal to put them within one of Oshawa. The one goal difference didn't last long, as Anthony Salinitri potted his second of the game off a beautiful move in alone on the Frontenacs goaltender. With just over four minutes left in the period, Kingston took a tripping penalty to give the Gens their first powerplay of the game. Making the most out of the man advantage, Allan McShane banked the puck in off a Fronts defender in front of the net, giving the Gens a 4-1 lead. With under two minutes left in the period, Oshawa took a high-sticking penalty that resulted in another powerplay goal for Kingston. The late goal by the Fronts put the score at 4-2 for the Gens heading into the second period.

2nd Period:

To open the second period, the Gens killed off the remainder of their penalty to hold a two-goal lead. At even strength, Oshawa controlled the play for the first half of the period, generating lots of time in the offensive zone and a few quality scoring chances. Just past the halfway point in the second, the Gens received a penalty for too many men on the ice, putting them on the penalty kill. With some big stops from Gens goaltender Aidan Hughes, Oshawa was able to kill off the Fronts powerplay. Towards the end of the period, the Gens continued to throw shots on net, leading with 22 shots to Kingston's 17. With only seconds left in the period, Serron Noel and Fronts defenseman Adrien Beraldo got in a fight after Noel collided with Kingston's goaltender. The Frontenacs got an extra two-minute penalty for instigating on the play, giving the Gens a powerplay to start the third.

3rd Period:

The Gens weren't able to score on the man advantage to start the game's final frame, keeping them up 4-2 over the Fronts. After Kington's penalty expired, the Gens took one of their own shortly afterward to put them down a man. With a strong effort on the PK, Oshawa killed of the penalty to return to even strength. Just before the ten-minute mark of the period, Anthony Salinitri put the Gens up 5-2 by shooting home a one-timer from the slot for his hattrick goal. The three-goal performance marked Salinitri's third hattrick in his past six games. After the goal, Kingston took back-to-back penalties for roughing and high-sticking, but the Gens weren't able to add to their lead on either of the chances. As the game winded down, the Gens held onto their three-goal lead to come away with a 5-2 victory over the Frontenacs.

After today's big win, the Gens will look to build off the two-point performance as they head on the road to battle North Bay on Thursday before returning home to square off against the Steelheads on Friday.
