Oshawa Generals News Release
Oshawa, Ontario - It was a tough evening for the home side Sunday night in Oshawa. The Generals were defeated 5-2 by the Mississauga St. Mike's Majors before a crowd of 3,284 at the General Motors Centre.
The first period was a hard fought, scoreless battle with neither side prepared to surrender any excellent scoring opportunities. Kyle Hope was back on the Generals blue line adding much needed depth to Oshawa's back end. Hope quarterbacked Oshawa's first power play opportunity of the game and did a good job of getting low, hard shots to the net. The Gens generated traffic at the top of the crease, but they couldn't get the deflection needed to beat Mississauga goaltender, JP Anderson.
Dan Altshuller made his third start in three nights and turned away all 13 shots that he faced in the opening frame. Spenser Cobbold made life interesting for Altshuller doing a nice toe drag with the puck before firing a wrist shot, but Oshawa's goaltender met the challenge with a solid pad save.
Oshawa's penalty killing unit shone in the opening twenty minutes killing off a 5-on-3, and Daniel Maggio and Colin Suellentrop did an excellent job of getting in shooting lanes and blocking shots. The Generals best scoring chance came when Lucas Lessio ripped the puck off of the crossbar midway through the period. Both teams headed into the second still chasing the game's opening goal.
The Majors broke out just 2:12 into the second period: Jamie Wise deflected a point shot past Altshuller who had no chance to react to the re-direction.
The Generals had their share of power play opportunities, but unfortunately, Mississauga struck twice short handed including a beautiful one-timer in tight by David Corrente.
Oshawa's power play got one back at 13:57 when JP Labardo backhanded a rebound past Anderson after a Nick Quinn wrist-shot from the point that was too hot to handle. Through two periods of play, the Generals trailed 3-1, but they held a slight edge in shots, 24-23.
Mississauga put the game on ice early in the third, Jordan Mayer one-timed a slap shot into the left corner of the net after a perfect cross feed from Riley Brace. Mayer had a whale of a third period scoring an additional marker that looked very much like the first one. On both plays, Altshuller had very little time to move laterally across the goal line: neither goal could be blamed on him.
Suellentrop managed to score on a shot from the point late in the third, but it was too little too late for the Red, Blue and White. The final score read 5-2.
The Generals outshot the Majors 38-31 on the evening and JP Labardo picked up the third star selection in a losing cause.
Oshawa hits the road on Thursday November 3rd to take on the Niagara Ice Dogs for a 7:00 PM start. The game can be seen live on Rogers TV Durham.
Oshawa's next home game is Sunday November 6th when they take on the Kitchener Rangers at the General Motors Centre. Start time is 6:05 PM.
