Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Thanks largely to their ability to score shorthanded goals, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors are back in first place in the Eastern Conference.
Jordan Mayer scored twice, the Majors scored two more shorthanded goals and got a 36-save performance from JP Anderson to down the Oshawa Generals 5-2 before 3,484 fans at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa on Sunday night.
Jamie Wise, Joseph Cramarossa and David Corrente scored the other goals for the Majors, while Dylan DeMelo and Riley Brace both added a pair of assists to give the Majors their 10th win of the season (10-3-0-2).
"Those shorthanded goals gave us the lead and we were able to maintain it," Mayer told Rogers TV after the game. "We played a really good game tonight and if we continue playing like this, we'll be in good shape the rest of the way."
J.P. Labardo and Colin Suellentrop were the goal scorers for the Generals (7-8-0-2), who lost their second straight game while playing their third game in as many nights.
After a scoreless first period, in which the Majors out-shot the Generals 13-8, it was Mississauga that opened the scoring at 2:46 of the second period. Wise deflected a shot from the point past goaltender Dan Altshuller to open the scoring for his third goal of the season.
Mississauga's potent penalty killing paid off again later in the second period with a shorthanded goal. Cramarossa fired his fifth goal of the year ' and third shorthanded marker ' at 10:33 to make it 2-0 for the Majors.
But Oshawa's power play then got the Generals right back into the game. Labardo slipped a backhand past Anderson at 13:57 much to the delight of the fans at the General Motors Centre, making it 2-1.
Mississauga scored yet another shorthanded goal at 16:29, however, as Corrente finished off a two-on-one break off a pass from Wise to restore the Majors two goal lead, making it 3-1 after two periods of play.
The Majors have nine shorthanded goals this year ' highest total in the league ' with Brace (5) and Cramarossa (3) having all but one of them between the two of them so far.
Mississauga got some more insurance early in the third period when Mayer took a pass from Brace and fired a shot past Altshuller just 1:17 into the final period to put the Majors ahead 4-1.
Mayer and Brace teamed up again nine minutes later on a similar looking play with Mayer again slapping a shot home at 10:49, Mayer's fifth tally of the season.
Suellentrop added a final goal for the Generals on another power play in the final minute to complete the scoring. The Majors wound up 0-for-6 on the power play while the Generals went 2-for-5 with the extra man while allowing the two shorthanded goals. Oshawa out-shot the Majors 38-31.
Mississauga plays in Brampton against the Battalion Thursday night and hosts the Peterborough Petes Friday, November 4 in their next home game at the Hershey Centre at 7:35 p.m. Tickets for all Majors games are on sale at the Hershey Centre box office and at www.ticketmaster.com.
