Generals Weekly Notes

January 18, 2010 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Flint Generals News Release

ON THE RECORD: The fourteenth week of the 2009-10 IHL season was slightly improved from the thirteenth, but not as much as the Generals had hoped for going into this past weekend's play, ending with a 1-2-0-0 record.

SHUT OUT SLUMP STOMPED: The Gens four game shutout slump was snapped Saturday night against Quad City. Jake Pence ended the 261:17 minutes of goalless play for the Generals and started them on their way to a 6-4 much needed victory.

ROUGH HOUSING: Over the course of the season the Gens have increased their physicality, getting to the front of the net, into the corners, and sticking up for themselves. Sunday's game against Bloomington took things to a new level. Less than 3 minutes into the third period multiple battles broke out, including a match between netminders Nick Niedert and Andrew Martin. When all was said and done 13 players split 28 penalties.

PK UNIT: The Generals penalty killing unit has improved the last few weeks. They are 5th in the league when on the road and have moved out of last place into 6th overall, killing off 13 of 17 penalties this past weekend and 23 of 29 in the past two weeks.

POWER OUTAGE: The Gens power play has struggled to say the least. This past weekend alone they managed only 3 goals on 20 man advantage opportunities. They had 9 power plays in both Friday and Sunday's games and only scored once, while they went 2 for 2 Saturday.

MAKE IT OR BREAK IT: This ever important month of January only has 4 remaining games, and with real separation showing between the third and fourth place spot, Bloomington, Dayton, and Quad City have really been fighting for that 4th and final playoff spot. Flint is not yet out of the race but they need to turn up their game if they want to play past April 18th.

MISC.:

~Nolan's 0-2-0-0 weekend and rough outing yesterday drops him to 4th in GAA but he remains 2nd in save percentage

~Flint had 136 PIM in Sunday's (Jan. 17th) game against Bloomington, the most by a team in a single game this season

~John Ronan's streaks of 11 straight games with a point and 7 straight games with a goal are still the longest current streaks (Ronan has been out with injury)

~Ben Boudreau's 5 minors in Sunday's game are the most in a single game by a player this season

~Pascal Rheaume is 10 points shy of reaching 600 total career points (regular season and post season combined)

~Tony Tuzzolino needs 6 points to reach career number 400 (combined regular and post season)
