Oshawa Generals News Release

It was another first in the East vs. first in the West matchup tonight as the Generals travelled to Erie to take on the Otters. For the second time this season, the Generals came out victorious over the Otters, winning the game 5-1.

Despite being down three players, Michael Dal Colle, Cole Cassels, and Sonny Hertzberg, all away at World Junior Training Camps, the Generals had no trouble defeating the top ranked team in the West. The Generals took advantage of all of their power play opportunities tonight and managed to defeat the Erie Otters for the second time this season.

The Generals were quick on scoring and Hunter Smith put one past Daniel Deknoning at only 4:42 in the first. The Otters were on the penalty at the time of the goal after Fergus was sent to the penalty box for delay of game. The goal was assisted by Josh Sterk and Tobias Lindberg Mitchell Vande Sompel took the first Generals penalty of the game, two minutes for holding, but the Otters couldn't make anything of it. At 11:23, Carlisle took two minutes in the box for roughing and again the Generals killed off the penalty. At 16:30, the Generals made things 2-0 with a goal from Stephen Desrocher, assisted by Bradley Latour. Sterk took a high sticking call with less than a minute remaining in the period and the first wrapped up with the Otters on another powerplay. Generals led shots on goal in the first period 12-11.

The penalty that ended the first period was killed off successfully at the start of the third. The Generals went to their second powerplay of the game at 2:20 when Maksimovich was called for holding. Less than two minutes later, Donnay was sent to the penalty box for tripping, giving the Generals a brief 5 on 3. Captializing on the opportunity, Bradley Latour scored the third Generals goal of the night, assisted by Vande Sompel and Carlisle. Vande Sompel's assist marked his 50th career OHL point. Following the goal, Smith took a Generals penalty for too many men on the ice and a few minutes later Vande Sompel sat for interference. The Otters finally managed to score on their powerplay, a goal from DeBrincat that would be the only one put past Appleby at tonight's game. Trent Fox and Aidan Wallace dropped the gloves near the end of the period but things were cut short as the players fell to the ice. Both players sat for five minutes each for fighting. The period closed with the Generals leading the Otters 3-1 and outshooting the team 8-6.

It was Mitchell Vande Sompel who proved to be the shining star in the third period, scoring two goals for the Generals. The period only saw two penalties, a high sticking call for Strome and a slashing call for Manchurek. Vande Sompel scored the fourth Generals goal of the night at 16:14, again on a power play. He wanted one more and put an empty netter goal in at 18:14. The Generals dominated the shots on goal in the third period, outshooting the Otters 14-8. Appleby stopped 24 of the 25 shots made by the Otters tonight and made a countless number of amazing saves throughout the game, earning him first star. Vande Sompel earned second star following two goals and one assist tonight and Latour was third star with one goal and one assist.

The Generals wrap up a weekend of road games tomorrow in Guelph when they take on the Storm for the first time this season at 6:30 P.M.
