Generals Calm the Storm in 3-2 Win
December 14, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals visited the Storm tonight and came out on top with a 3-2 win. This was the first of two meetings this season. Tonight was the third consecutive road game for the Generals who fell short to Niagara on Friday, but took the win over Erie on Saturday.
Kenny Appleby made his 25th start in net for the Generals tonight, while Van Schubert of Guelph stood between the pipes for the Storm. Matthew Hotchkiss had a huge scoring opportunity but was robbed by Appleby early into the period. The first penalty of the night went to Luke Cairns for tripping but only seconds later, the Generals power play was negated with a tripping call to Bradley Latour. With four minutes remaining, Zac Leslie made his way to the net with a good scoring chance but was shutdown by Appleby. Despite no goals in the first twenty minutes, it was an entertaining first period with some good chances for both teams. Shots on goal favoured the Generals at 12-6 after 20 minutes.
Although no goals were scored in the first period, the Generals came out hungry in the second and managed to score two goals within two minutes. The first came from Joe Manchurek, assisted by Chris Carlisle 3:21 into the period. This gave Manchurek his 10th point and Carlisle his 20th point in 29 games this season. A hooking penalty to Austin Hall gave the Generals a chance to put their top ranked power play skills to work. Sam Harding found the net with the man advantage, with help from Mitchell Vande Sompel and Tobias Lindberg. With a two-goal lead, the Generals had another power play after Kyle Rhodes went off for cross-checking but they were unable to capitalize with the extra man. Three more penalties to Turner, Bertuzzi of Guelph and Latour, gave both teams power play opportunities but the period wrapped up with Oshawa up 2-0.
Oshawa entered the third a man short with over a minute left in the Latour penalty. Just after the penalty expired, Aidan Wallace made it 3-0 with assists by Josh Sterk and Cliff Pu. The assist on Wallace's goal marked Pu's first OHL point in fourteen games played. The three-goal lead didn't last, as Guelph took advantage of the power play from a tripping penalty on Smith with a goal by Pius Suter. At 14:18, Guelph narrowed the gap even more with another goal, this time from Cairns. With two quick goals from Guelph, Oshawa got lucky with a much-needed power play. Unfortunately, it didn't last long after Carlisle was sent to the box for tripping. Van Schubert headed to the bench to give Guelph an extra attacker, which almost lead to another goal. Despite a close call in the last few seconds of the game, the Generals pulled off the 3-2 win over the Storm.
Both teams were missing players during tonight's game. The Generals were without Michael Dal Colle, Cole Cassels and Sonny Hertzberg who are all away at World Junior camps. The Storm were missing some keys players as well including Robby Fabbri and Jason Dickinson due to World Junior selection camps.
The Generals are on the road again this Friday when they face off against the North Bay Battalion. Although they don't play on home ice until Sunday, Dec. 28 against the Petes, you can catch some junior hockey on Sunday, Dec. 21 when the GM Centre hosts a World Junior Pre-Competition game.
