Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals laced up tonight at the Tribute Communities Centre for Game 2 of their first-round series against the Peterborough Petes. Oshawa came out of the playoff gates buzzing, grabbing a dominant 7-0 victory over the rival Petes at home on Friday in Game 1. Looking to keep up the momentum and take a 2-0 series lead, the Gens aimed for another hometown victory in tonight's post-season action.
Prior to puck drop at tonight's game, Oshawa welcomed back Gens alumni from the Memorial Cup-winning 1990 team in Hockey Hall of Famer and Generals legend Eric Lindros and teammate Craig Donaldson. The duo kicked off the evening by dropping the puck for the pre-game ceremonial puck drop.
1st Period:
The Gens started the game off on fire, wasting no time lighting the lamp thirty seconds into the contest after Brandon Saigeon dropped the puck for Danil Antropov in the offensive zone who ripped home the game's first tally. After the goal, the Petes generated several shots on net in the early minutes of the period but Gens goaltender Kyle Keyser came up big to shut the door. As the period approached the halfway mark, the Gens added to their lead with a perfect shot from the point by defenseman Nicolas Mattinen that beat Petes goalie Hunter Jones to put the Gens up by two. Just moments after the second goal, Oshawa continued to pile on the offense with Ty Tullio notching his first playoff goal off a shot from the side of the net to give the Gens a big 3-0 lead and chase Jones from Peterborough's net in exchange for Tye Austin. In the latter half of the first, the Gens took the game's first penalty for too many men on the ice to give the Petes a powerplay. With a strong penalty kill effort, Oshawa was able to hold off Peterborough to hang onto their commanding lead. Nearing the end of the period, the Petes took an interference penalty to give the Gens the man advantage but they weren't able to pot one on the opportunity, sending them into the intermission up 3-0.
2nd Period:
Oshawa began the period with a powerplay off a Peterborough roughing penalty taken at the end of the first but went unsuccessful on the attempt. The Gens were next to head off to the box after taking a high-sticking penalty a few minutes into the second. Oshawa nearly killed off the penalty but Petes forward Christopher Paquette was able to get a shot through traffic and into the net with just seconds remaining in the penalty, putting the score at 3-1. After Peterborough's goal, Keyser had to make a big kick save minutes later to keep Oshawa's two-goal lead. In the back half of the period, the Gens took another penalty for tripping to put the PK back to work. However, with an amazing penalty kill effort that started with two big blocks from defenseman Mitchell Brewer, captain Kyle MacLean was able to take the play into Peterborough's end and snipe a shorthanded goal past Austin to put the Gens up 4-1. As the period neared its final minutes, the Petes were called for a diving penalty but were able to kill it off, sending the Gens into the game's final frame with a 4-1 lead.
3rd Period:
The Gens began the period on the powerplay from a Petes penalty taken near the end of the second period. Capitalizing on the man advantage, Allan McShane buried a rocket shot past Austin for a powerplay tally to put the score at 5-1. The Gens offense wasn't done there, as just moments after the fifth goal the Gens added another after Anthony Salinitri one-timed a pass from Serron Noel into the back of Peterborough's net. Keeping up their incredible play, Oshawa got their third goal in just over a minute span off a shot from Cole Resnick in the slot, giving the Gens a massive 7-1 lead. After the seventh goal, the Gens took back to back penalties for delay of game and too many men on the ice but were able to kill off both with strong defense. With just under seven minutes left in the game, the Petes managed to get their second goal of the game from a backhand shot in close to put the score at 7-2. The Gens came right back with another tally of their own, with Tullio notching his second goal of the game off a great shot from the slot. As the period winded down, the Gens shut down the Petes and came away with a big 8-2 win in Game 2.
With another massive home win tonight to take a 2-0 series lead, the Gens will look to keep the victories rolling when the team heads to Peterborough for Games 3 and 4 this week before returning to Oshawa for Game 5 on Saturday if needed. Click here to buy your Round One tickets!
