Oshawa Generals News Release
The Oshawa Generals acquired a pair of veteran players in two separate deals made by the Ontario Hockey League team on Wednesday.
The Generals picked up left winger left winger Igor Gongalsky from the Owen Sound Attack and left winger Kris Belan from the London in the two transactions, with the Generals giving up a draft pick in exchange in both players.
Gongalsky was acquired for an eighth round selection in the 2008 draft, while the Generals gave up a 15th round pick for Belan, also in 2008.
The two additions will add some experienced depth to the Generals roster, according to Oshawa General Manager/Coach Brad Selwood.
"We have acquired a couple of experienced veteran players who will bring a lot of character to our young team," Selwood said.
"Kris is a hard worker and tough player who comes to play every night and Igor is an extremely good defensive forward. Their skills and attitudes are just what we are looking to add to this young team right now as we continue to move forward."
Gongalsky is a 6-foot, 218-pound forward who turns 20 years old next month. He's played the past three seasons with the Attack and is a reliable defensive forward with 18 games of OHL playoff experience.
Born in Kiev, Ukr, Ukraine, the Toronto resident appeared in 64 games in 2005-06, scoring six goals and adding 12 assists for 18 points and 65 penalty minutes. He had two goals and no assists in 11 games with the Attack this season.
Belan, from Florence, Ontario, is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound forward who has 14 games of OHL playoff experience with the Knights, all last season.
In 62 games last season, Belan had seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points and 129 penalty minutes in his second season with the Knights.
"We made these moves because we believe we have a team capable of having a successful season, and having two more character veterans in our lineup will help our younger talent develop," Selwood added.
Both players will be in the lineup Saturday when the Generals play in Belleville against the Bulls. Oshawa plays its final home game at Civic Auditorium Sunday at 6:05 p.m. against the Kingston Frontenacs with special post-game ceremonies featuring Generals alumni to commemorate the rich 42-year history of the arena.
Generals first home game at the General Motors Centre is Friday, November 3.
