Flint Generals News Release
FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals, proud members of the IHL, fell to the Dayton Gems Friday night at Perani Arena 4-1. The game dropped the Generals to a record of 3-10-0-2.
The opening period was played tight by both teams, with shots on goal remaining close throughout. But it was John Snowden that struck first getting an unassisted goal at 13:15. Snowden took a shot from the left faceoff dot putting the puck between the legs of defenseman Jake Pence and through the five-hole of Jean-Francois Labbe.
The Gens got their chances but Dayton opened up a 2-0 lead at 14:09 with a power play goal from Joe VanCulin, beating Labbe from the short side. Edgars Brancis assisted on the play. The Gens cut the lead in half with a goal from Jamie Schaafsma, his seventh of the season, at 16:34. They had a lot of chances with traffic in front and after banging away at the puck for a few seconds Schaafsma got the puck from John Ronan and was able to crack Ryan Mior. Dayton's Sam Bloom later benefited from a penalty shot opportunity, and slid the puck between the pads of Labbe restoring the Gems' two goal lead.
Generals Coach Jason Muzzatti made a goaltending change to start the second period, putting in rookie goalie Rob Nolan. Being the beneficiaries of three early power plays, including a carry over from the first, the Generals some good scoring chances but were unable to score. The Gems made them pay by scoring a shorthanded goal during Flint's third man advantage opportunity. Tim Hartung got the goal with assists from AJ MacLean and Nathan Oke at 7:15.
The Generals managed ten shots on goal in the third but were unable to score despite many great chances. But Nolan kept Dayton from adding to their score by stopping the 13 shots the Gems fired his way in the final period and 22 of 21 in 40:00 minutes of play.
Special teams for the Generals were not much help, going 0-5 with the man advantage, allowing a power play goal and a short handed goal.
The Generals next game is Sunday in Dayton, the puck is set to drop at 5:00 pm. They return to Perani Wednesday November 25th for a 7:30 matchup with the Muskegon Lumberjacks.
